Ever since I was a child (I am 37 now) I have had something come up into my throat. It happens here and there-perhaps once a month or every few months. As a kid it was like a little pea sized held together shape. It had a foul odor to it and was nearly the color of skin. It was the consistency of like cottage cheese sorta, but a bit harder. As I have aged, it is no longer in one little package. Now when it comes up (seems to be a little less frequently) it is multiple pieces and no consistent shape. It still smells horrible. It will come up unexpectedly, with barely a warning. Kind of like when you vomit. I will cough it out into my hand. What the heck is it?
(I have GERD, a hiatal hernia, IBS with consitpation--that I know of.) I am wondering if this is what bile is? I am now (have been for 3-5 yrs.) on proton pump inhibitor drugs, and that seems to have lessened the frequency of this. However, it seems highly freaky to me.
I thought at one point it was stomach acid mixed with like nasal drainage (?), but it seems to smell like death (LOL) and I wonder if it is from elsewhere. Anyone?
