Re: Anyone with Chronic idiopathic nausea?

Hi Idwika and nausea queen,
i think the antibiotics are helping somewhat. i havent felt bad nausea for a few days though i have had really really bad headaches instead!
im also taking 70 mgs of amitryptline ( up from 60) and i have changed to a new PPI and anti reflux drug.
i have another two weeks of the antibiotics and then i will know whether it has made a difference.
im still only able to work 3 days a week so that is my barometre of health. when i feel up to working full time, i will know I have nailed this thing!

Re: Anyone with Chronic idiopathic nausea?

oh, as to whether there was a trigger, it's hard to know. i became very sick very quickly in march. dr borody thinks that maybe i had a gut infection that has stayed and become chronic.

Aussiegirl2 - That is very interesting what Prof. Borody said, he told me the same thing over the phone. Did he give you any tests? Did you feel that he was a good doctor? Was he particulalry expensive? Did he say if he has had success with many patients with Chronic Idiopathic Nausea? If you have 3 weeks of antibioitics it is going to take close to 3 weeks to know if they are going to work so fingers crossed for you. Are you taking both rifaxamin and vancomycin at the same time? I am so interested in your outcome because I have always thought that I have some sort of "stomach bug" that refuses to go away; in fact this seems the only reasonable explanation.

hi idkwia,
I think dr borody is a good doctor but like i said he's outside the mainstream. The fee was the same as any specialist in australia would charge (A$220)
we can claim that back here (u are in london?)
he says he has treated patients with antibiotics before with success and he explained how it would work. but he was also realistic and not promising to cure me. Im taking both drugs at the same time and each week the dose increases.
i am feeling better than i was. the last bad day i had was last saturday.
do you have a doctor in england that could prescribe the same regimen?
its worth a try, i havent really had any side effects from the drugs.

he hasnt done any tests as i have had an endoscopy 3 months ago.

Aussie Girl2 - thanks so much for the update. Yes, I could get my doctor to prescribe antibiotics but I will wait to see your outcome first and if it is positive I will probably try to speak to Prof Borody again.
I was asking about testing as I thought that perhaps he would have given you a stool test first to see if they could find any bugs.
Did he say what he thinks is wrong with you?

hi idkwia
i actually had a bit of a set back on the weekend. i felt really sick and was up at 4 am this morning with really bad nausea. im in my third week of antibiotics.
he didnt take any samples. the antibiotics im taking are gut specific.. so will kill off any bugs in the gut. i was feeling good about the treatment but today i feel pretty crappy ( althou i am at work)
he says bacteria in the bug can manifest as nausea. i might send him an email later today.

also i meant to ask idkwia and nausea queen if either of u have had any tests on your esophagus. Quite often i have problems swallowing and i often feel like food (and pills) are stuck. i always have to have a drink close by when i eat in case i choke. have either of u felt that??

Aussiegirl2 - so sorry to hear that you have not been feeling well, hopefully it will just be a minor setback and you will now move forward.
I did have some times about a year or more ago, when I was also nauseous, that my swallow didn't seem quite right and I mentioned it to my doctor and he immediately sent me for tests. I really would urge you to mention this to your docotor as this may be something that is also causing your nausea. There is a condition called eosinophilic esophagitis which is a condition of the oesophagus that can definitely cause chronic nausea as I know someone who has it. Let me know how you get on.

Hi
Yes I will raise the swallowing issue with my doc. I think i need a new gastroenterologist as mine is convinced my nausea is idiopathic despite the fact i havent had any tests of my gallbladder, stomach emptying or esophagus.
another thing - you mentioned a chinese medicine doctor. I have come across one who has had remarkable success with conditions such as ulcerative colitis and MS. HAve u had much luck with the one you are seeing?

Well I have seen the Chinese Doctor 11 times now but I am certainly not completely better although I would like to think that I am somewhat better but this may just be a coincidence. I said I would give him 3 months and if it didn't work I would move on to something else. I will definitely let you know if I get better.
I would have thought that Prof Borody would have considered all possible reasons for your illness wouldn't he?

Hi
Ive been on the antibiotics, but because the results werent as good as he hoped, dr borody has ordered all the tests done ( for different bugs and parasites)
In the mean time i have started seeing a chinese doctor. he says it is my liver not working properly and that he can fix it. he doesnt think it is parasites.
he has had very good results with other people (independent) people ive spoken to. i am seeing him every day for a week and reducing down my medication. im down to 45 mg amitryptline and will drop to 30 tonight for a few nights. im also taking revolting herbs twice a day! what about you?

Hi Aussiegirl2 - sorry to hear that the antibiotics didn't work for you. Hopefully the tests you have done will show something and that at last you can be treated for it.
I have had 36 lots of acupuncture with 2 different Chinese doctors. I have also be taking Chinese herbs for about 6 months, again from 2 different Chinese doctors. Both of them said they could cure me but my hope has turned to doubt but I will continue for another 4 or 5 weeks and if no joy then I will move onto something else.
Could you do me a favour please? I wrote to Dr Borody and subsequently had a telephone consultation which cost 300 dollars. I was left sort of in limbo as he had to finish the telephone consultation rather quickly. I have since written to him again and sent emails to his secretary but have had no reply. I am going to write to him again today. If you get an opportunity I wonder if you could mention me to him and ask him if he could possibly get back to me. My name is Stephen Prince. Don't worry if you don't get a chance.
Keep us posted with your progress please, good luck!

Hi
Im probably talking to dr borody later this week so i will raise your case.
im waiting for the results of tests that he has ordered for parasites etc.
the chinese doc says that i should feel better by the end of next week. i am seeing him every day and have stopped taking all my meds apart from the amitryptiline. (im down to 30 mgs)
the chinese doc does acupuncture, chinese massage, cupping etc every day.. for an intense period ( like 2 weeks) to really bring on changes in the body.
im hopeful ... i spoke to another patient that this chinese doctor treated who had ulcerative colitis and he was able to treat him so his symptoms went away. (pls another patient with high blood pressure)
i will keep u posted. two other questions - are you able to work full time or study with the illness?
also have u been tested for parasites and infections like c.difficile?

Aussiegirl2 - I have had 5 stool tests done by diefferent labs but none of them found any infection or parasites unfortunately.
Good luck with the Chinese doctor and with Borody.
Thanks for mentioning my case to Borody for me. I did write to him again last week, it will take 5 days or so to reach him but hopefully he will have it by now.
I am retired so I do not work or study.
I also get this feeling or something, probably faeces stuck in my colon, maybe just below the sigmoid. I have this feeling about 75% of the time even though I evacuate my bowels twice per day on average; it is very uncomfortable.
I also often feel more nauseous just before, during or after opening my bowels, does this happen to you?
Regards
Steve Prince

hi steve
i didnt hear from dr borody so i will call him early next week. I feel i am have having some success with the chinese approach. i am now off all my medications.(in 1 week)
i wouldnt say i feel good but at least i do not have the awful side effects of the medications ( as well as nausea)
i also think the gluten free diet has made a difference maybe its worth trying that again for you?
im feel nausea sometimes before i go to the bathroom and usually better afterwards.
that feeling of "faeces stuck in my colon" is very typical for IBS. i have not had that feeling since switching to gluten free.
i will let u know after im made contact with dr borody
