Plagued with Sulfur Gas, Diarrhea and Vomiting... PLEASE HELP!!!
As embarassing as this has been, I'm going to disclose all the gory details in hopes of finding an answer....
About three months ago, I had what I thought was just a "bug" that completely immobilized me for a few days. It all started with becoming extremely bloated, and constantly burping and passing gas. Except it wasn't just ANY gas....it was RANCID!!! It tasted and smelled like rotten eggs, and the sulfuric excretions would send my fiancee running for the air freshener!
At first, I thought the Deviled Eggs I had eaten the night before were just wrecking havoc on my system. So I took some Gas-X and my Zantac prescription, hoping everything would quiet down. Then, a few hours later, the diarrhea kicked in. I'm just not talking about your ordinary, run-of-the mill runs....this was explosive, stinky and painful, and VERY frequent! The first few trips to the bathroom produced nothing but pure brown liquid, then the following trips produced yellowish, slimy, almost greasy floaters covered in foam. As if that wasn't bad enough, those same secretions from that end started coming up the other. I was sitting on the toilet with a trash can in my lap the entire night and most of the next day. I was MISERABLE!!!
It took me two days to be able to hold anything down or drink anything other than water, and almost two weeks to feel like my normal self. I brushed it off as a fluke....maybe the eggs were bad or I had developed an allergy to them. So for the next three months, I avoided eggs like the plague and thought the problem would never resurface. Until yesterday....
The same problems, in the same order, presented themselves to me again as I was busy fixing dinner yesterday evening. The bloating, the sulfur burps and gas, then the explosive diarrhea. I started feeling EXTREMELY nauseous last night around 11pm, but I think the battery of baking soda, TUMS and milk kept the bile from coming up completely. 30 hours later, the burps and the runs are still keeping me on my toes, and the nausea has kept me from eating anything. My doctor is blowing me off, saying I just have the stomach flu. I've had the stomach flu, and BELIEVE ME.....this isn't it!!!!
The thing that mystifies me is that I haven't eaten eggs in three months....since the last episode of this "Rotten Egg Disease". Has anyone else had this problem? Has anyone else gotten any real answers? Please help....I don't know if I can take another round of this!!

You really need to have the stool analyzed. It sounds like you may have C. diff. Have you been on antibiotics recently? C. Diff is really foul smelling and has explosive diarrhea. I can't believe your doc is blowing this off. You need stool specimens checked for multiple bugs. If your doc blows this off, you may need to go to the ER to get stool samples done to see what is going on. If you continue to vomit and have diarrhea,your electrolytes will get out of balance, and you will become dehydrated. So, don't ignore it. Foul smelling stool is not normal. I work in Endoscopy...there are multiple things that could cause this, but I would start with stool samples first.

Thanks for the info, roge35. I took your advice and had a few tests done, and it's not C-Diff or any type of parasite or an infection that the lab can come up with. My WBC is normal, and the doc's stumped. He's referred me to a specialist, but the problem's gone now....just like last time. Has anyone out there ever had this happen? I'd love to have some possible answers next time this nasty little problem comes back!!

hey there, I know where you`re coming from for sure. on christmas morning hubby drove me to the ER with severe nausea, diarrhea, severe bloating gas, and uh yes thank goodness for "GLADE"! well the Doc said I had an intestinal virus, gave me phergan & demerall for neausea & pain & slept til the cows came home. well they gone again! Just last Monday night another trip to the ER! same thing and lets not leave out the vomiting, just like you sitting on toilet and holding the trash can, another round of phenergan & demerall, but they did blood work, a good ole bag of IV fluids cause I was dehydrated, and hey a CT scan. That said I had a kidney stone in the right kidney, after doing all kinds of research on kidney stones that very well I think could be the culprit, My reg. Dr. said where there is 1 there is usually more, just what I needed, now I am scheduled for a kidney ultrasound this thursday. I said all that to say this, have your Dr. to run tests to check for kidney stones. Hey always a first time for everything (if you havent had them before) definately a first for me, today I felt a little nauseous but went away. Let us know what turns out. Tommorrow I am going to a new Dr. lets see what happens. But know you are not alone, I feel ya pain.

i have had the same problem and when i told my dad about what was going on with me he said that he really thinks its my gallbladder. Both my Gran and my Aunt had to have their gallbladders removed and they too had experienced what i am going through. As of last night I again started having problems with the rotten egg burps and diarrhea. I hate feeling like this because all i want to do is lay around! I wonder if its my choice of foods? I tend to get like this anytime i eat something thats greasy, however thats not all the time. Lets all hope that someone out there can figure out whats going on with us!

GB is certainly a possibility. I get the foul smelling stuff from time to time when (I believe) mine acts up but is mostly controllable via diet. You can always try out a low-fat, healthy fat diet for a while and see. Worst case you'll just be eating healthy. Seriously though, there are plenty of recommended gallbladder diets out there of what to eat and what to avoid and I've had a fair amount of success. Not like before, but, certainly acceptable to me.
In general I need to avoid anything that's not healthy (caffeine, sugar, soda, chocolate, candy, etc). For the fats I do eat, I focus on mono- or poly-unsaturated (Olive Oil, Nuts, Fish, etc). I also try and eat a fair amount of 'beets'.
I know for me I have to avoid Eggs (and most foods made with eggs like Mayonnaise, Pancakes, Waffles, French Toast, etc). Note that there are other foods to avoid and I've found some take a few days to show signs of symptoms so it's best to start with a very narrow diet, keep a journal, and add things in slowly.
Once you get it narrowed down you can add some of your favorites back in, in moderation and see what happens. I can take small amounts of Chocolate (in Granola bars for example) and a little pizza now and then. If I have too much though, I pay the price.
I've found when going through an attack I need to eat a real bland diet. Usually takes 2-3days to calm down again. During that time I'll try and get a fair amount of fluids and eat rice,chicken, broccoli, and a few other safe foods that work for me. It's also good to get some probiotics in, non-fat Yogurt works for me but some folks have allergies and/or aversions to it.
There are a number of other possibilities outside of Gallbladder, but eating healthy and keeping track of symptoms will only help you and the doctors figure out what is going on sooner. It's been my experience that there aren't any magic cures for the chronic digestive problems, it's a matter of trial and error, with some meds to control symptoms when diet, nutrition, and exercise fails.

Please get a simple bloodtest for celiac disease. You

I have been going through the SAME thing for the past five months. The only additional symptom is how I experience sharp pain in my stomach - however it tends to come and go.
I had the same tests done- celiac came back negative, my liver was in great shape, I didn't have an issues with my blood work - all two rounds of it with 4-5 tubes of blood taken each time.
They sent me for an ultra sound which came back negative for gall stones and all that jazz. Sent me for a HIDA scan and wow... it was pretty painful. And the Doc just called to say my gall bladder is functioning at less than 1% !!!!
Moral of the story - I had to PUSH my doc's to run the test. At one point they told me it was just stress. I went to a GI doc and they are still sending me for a colonoscopy just to make sure I don't have anything else going on.
PLEASE keep pushing them to run tests - they may not be pleasant however your health is much more important!!!!

hey there, i'm a 16 year old girl... well 17 in a few days. But... i'm going thought the exact thing your going through, but i'm on my 6th day. the flu is going around very rampidly. Im 100% sure i dont have it, if i get too tired, and worn down or eat too much greasy foods, i get the egg burps.but i have intense stomach pain, along with vomiting. i love with my mom and she gets worried about it, but the only way around it is eatting healthy. slow down on the meats and try more fruit and vegies.

Oh my gosh, I have been dealing with this for a year. First the doctor thought it was gallbladder, tested, had "sludge" prescribed ursidol to increase bile. For a little while i was ok, but then, seems it didn't work, continued vomitting kept getting worse, hurt more, smelled terrible, was awful. He is now leaning on believing I have "diabetic gastropathy", which means your stomach does not contract and send the digested food down the large & small intestine out to the colon. I will have a Hida scan next week, to see if the gallbladder is functioning properly.
Do you have diabetes? Do you take any other medications for anything. Some medications can "decrease stomach mobility" (as an example antidepressants can do this)...so you vomit because the food backs up.
Don't know if any of this is helpful but I can totally understand...that whole belching rotten eggs thing, NOW SCARES ME TO DEATH, because I know that shortly thereafter I will vomit and be in severe pain and wiped out for three days.
It is horrible and I can not wait to find out what it is.

I, too spent several occasions with your symptoms, clutching the wastebasket while sitting on the toilet. It was miserable and it took a couple of days afterwards to feel human again. I tried to figure out what the problem was and the next to the last time, I realized the only thing I'd eaten that was out of the ordinary was Oreo cookies. The last time, I was at my daughter's house, and was offered some cookies covered with a minty chocolate. These were Oreo cookies, but I didn't know it at the time. That night, I woke up with horrid belches, followed by the need to vomit then with diarrhea. Since then, I have avoided Oreo cookies, or any other brand of chocolate sandwich cookies, and have had no recurrences. JOY! I hope this helps someone. It took about 2 years for me to figure this out. If anyone else cuts out Oreos and the symptoms stop, please post it so others don't have to suffer! Thanks.

I had this exact same thing happen to me. The first time the hospital ER said I had some kind of infection, because my white count was elevated. The second time they said I had pancreatitis. Then I went to my GI doctor and he thinks I have diabetic gastroparesis but needs to run tests to find out for sure. Strange and still not sure what it is or was...but it was a rough one. I have not thrown up in 5 weeks, but have been on several meds for chronic gastitus to help ....

For the past few years I have had Sulfur gas attacks with in two to four hours
major vomiting and the runs. It seemed like a bactiria had turned my stomach into
a BioReactor. So I thought I would fight fire with fire. I bought these "good bactiria"
capsules.They are called a probiotic supplement and have a bacteria called Bifantis
in them. I take one every other day, they say every day but hay they arne't free.
Since then I have not had one attack. And ya doctors seem totally befuduled by this.
I would love to know what causes this if anyone has any ideas. So far the only thing
I have come up with is possably a grain or sesame seeds in large amounts may play
some role some how. I have Crohns and dont have all my intestines so that may make
me a better host. My Crohns has been under control for many years now.
Good luck to everybody, I know that feeling of impending doom when you burp and
it tastes like rotten eggs. NOT a good feeling at all.

I am 63 years old and have lived (I use that word loosely) with this condition for about the past 40 of those years. My symptoms are exactly as described by most everyone. It begins with bloating and a feeling that my stomach will not empty. Then it progresses to the vile burping, diarrhea and then vomiting. It generally leaves me totally incapacitated for about 72 hours and on many occasions, it will return with equal vengence in 3-5 days. I have had colonoscopys, abdominal CT scans, tests for lactose intolerance just to name a few with no diagnosis. I had a recurrance about 2 weeks ago and I am now scheduled for a gastroscopy. I don't expect to receive a diagnosis from this proceedure either. My symptoms always include quite a bit of pain just below my diaphragm which makes me think that maybe the pancreas could be part or all of the problem but lab test always are indicative of a normal functioning pancreas. My gall bladder was removed about 5 years ago and I remained symptom free for about a year after that, leading me to believe that they had found the problem but the symptoms returned and I am back to where I was prior to g.b. surgery. If you read the numerous blogs on the internet, it is apparent that this is a major health problem. I can't understand why medical science has not been able to figure this one out. Many people's lives, including mine, would be vastly improved if this malady could be diagnosed and cured.

This is my third "flare up" as I call them. Same symptoms you've all described. Ultra full feeling, then sulfur burps, immediate diarriah, and vomiting. Oh happy day. I do see a gastro next month but this is he'll now! I can't afford another er trip for this. It saddens me to see that no one has the answer.
