Colonoscopy was horrific

I posted the below under another thread. I did get one response. Hope you don't mind that I created a new thread regarding my recent colonoscopy. I figure others may miss it on the older thread.

And this really is a new subject.

Would like to know if any others have ever experienced what I did. I need a second EGD and I am scared to death, and at this point will NEVER go through another procedure, even at the risk of my health. Please see below.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Hi:
Well, I made it through my colonoscopy, but I had a real tough time.

When I got there my heart rate was 39, so I had to be given fluids until I was more stable. I have NO idea why my BP and heart rate were so slow. I was on the "wait" to go list for 5 hours before they began the procedure.

But here is what I would really like to hear about from others. If others have experienced this I'd appreciate any input.

This happened on my previous EGD and on my Colonoscopy:

I was basically wide awake and in extreme pain for most of the procedure! I'll stick to the colonoscopy for this thread. They started by giving me Zofran because I had severe nausea. Then I guess they kick in the sedative and the pain killer. Well, I felt everything! And I mean it hurt! I have a pretty good tolerance for pain, but I was screaming it hurt so bad. They even tried rolling me on my back from my left side to help ease the pain. I even remember hearing the Dr say something like give him another 25MG of painkiller. Did absolutely nothing. It's like the medications just do not work on me. I was not even feeling sleepy.

Has this ever happened to anyone else? Most people I have talked to say that they really remember nothing. They sort of fade out and the next thing they remember they are in recovery. I will NEVER go through this again! Do some people, like me, need to be knocked out completely? I mean this has happened twice to me now. I'm sort of mad that they did not stop the procedure. The only thing I can figure is maybe I was out for the bulk of the procedure and became wide awake for the last 5 minutes or whatever. So maybe she figured, finish it up. It felt like forever....

Dazed and confused,
Jimm

When you have your followup appt. you may need to ask the gastro doc as to why you did not respond to the sedative and pain meds given during the procedure.
I've asked doctors to post on my records the versed and fenatyl alert, mainly due to if i would ever have to have emergency surgery, i would not want those meds given . I never would want to repeat the nightmare i had to go through.
Hope this helps a bit, i totally understand as to why you would not want to have another procedure.

Re: Colonoscopy was horrific

do you remember the meds? There is one ( and im sorry i cannot remember the name I want to say its Versafed or something like that) that 10% of people it doesnt work on. THis isnt a paid medication nor is it a sleep medication its more of an amnesia inducing product that makes you not remember the procedure. Unfourtunetly it doesnt work on everyone. Before you appointment you can request propofol and that WILL knock you out but it will cost more because there needs to me an anistesiologist there with you to monitor you.

I would say PLEASE do not stop getting colonsocopys because they are for YOUR health. Talk with your Gastro and see if there arent other options for medication.

Re: Colonoscopy was horrific

I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy done 5 years ago and remember nothing until I was back home. A few weeks ago I had a repeat. Same drugs fentanyl and versad. I did fine until the dr started to go for my right side which is where I have alot of pain. I woke up and remembering telling her to stop. She doubled the dose and gave me the max. I tried to get off the table. She stopped the procedure. That is the only thing I remember. I am having it done again next week but with the propopal. I am very nervous about it. I was talking to the pharmacist and he was shocked I woke up and remember it.

Mel, I also had a terrible time with the fentanyl and versed.
I'm wondering if you did okay with the Propopal ?
Having the Propopal did you sleep thru the procedure ?
Thanks for sharing if you will please.

Re: Colonoscopy was horrific

Behappy, I had the procedure today. It was totally pain-free. Had an IV put in, met the dr and the anethesiologist and the next thing was waking up. No problems. Had a headache but coffee and some food helped. I was tired when I got home, took a nap and am feeling better. That was the way to go. (literally haha) The good news there wasn't even anything to biopsy as everything was good. The bad news is why do I have this severe side pain? On to the next tests......

Re: Colonoscopy was horrific

Just had a colonostomy and tube donw the throat thing. They gave me demorol and something else. It was awsome I was pain free for the rest of the day. I remember going into the procedure room and then waking up in the recovery room. No pain or ill effects from the procedure. The worst part was the day before cleanse which gave me a gut ache and cramps that lasted through the nest day.

Re: Colonoscopy was horrific

Mel, Good for you having a pain free and good results. That's good news.

I still have the fear of ever having a repeat due to my nightmare with the
Fentanyl and Versed. Indeed it was horrific.

Thanks so much for sharing all you've been through. i appreciate to hear i was not the only one to go through all. Sad though, no one should have to be put through this. My Gastro doc did not stop when i screamed in such pain as he was doing biopsy's. My body was paralysed, i could not move.
Finally when i could scream and all is remembered so well in my mind.

Thanks for sharing.

Re: Colonoscopy was horrific

My very first colonoscopy was like that - excruciatingly painful. The next one wasn't bad at all because of Versed. However, I haven't had one in over 10 years because of the pain that comes AFTER the procedure. (Lots of scar tissue from surgeries).

Re: Colonoscopy was horrific

OMG I can't imagine. It's weird how 5 years ago I had it and an endoscopy and don't remember a thing. This time the only thing I remember was when the dr went to my right side. I slept through the endoscopy and all the biopsies. The dr had to stop, I was trying to get off the table.
Anyway, the propoal worked very well in the second procedure. The prep the day before is a well, pain in the butt, but it is an important test.
