I've had trouble with gas for the past 2.5 years. It started as frequent sulfur-smelling gas for about a year, then turned to just frequent gas with occasional diarrhea/constipation for another year. Now, the nasty sulfur-smelling gas is back, and I don't know what's causing it. I've seen GI docs and they've checked just about every last thing and told me I have IBS. That may be, but what I can't figure out is how I can go to feeling fine with some extra gas to slight nausea, frequent sulfur-smelling gas, and a cramping/burning feeling in my lower abdomin while eating the same foods with the same about of water and exercise over the past 8 months?
So here's what I've done:
I've take probiotics, digestive enzymes with meals, and gradually increased my fiber and water intake over the past 6 months. For the past 2 months I have maintained relatively the same diet and exercise behaviors, and only within the past 2 weeks I've had the sulfur-gas smell come back. It seems to affect me more in the evenings, and passing stoll doesn't seem to help much. (I may get an hour or 2 temporary break from the gas, but it always comes back). My poop doesn't smell sulfury at all either, so it's just gas. The only thing change I can think of it that I was recently put on a birthcontrol pill by my doctor to regulate my period. I know progesterone can cause peristalsis to slow, and be more likely to cause constipation, but I was on it for a month without any problems, and I've had these symptoms at times when before I was even on the pill.
I have avoided eggs, raw milks and cream, coffee, high acidic foods, and fatty foods for the past year now. I'm not lactose intolerant because I've eaten cheese and yogurt and have been fine before.
Does anyone know what could cause such foul smelling gas? What I eat doesn't seem to make a difference. And I still have BM (usually pretty moist and not always formed) every 1-2 days, so it doesn't seem like things are fermenting in my colon. I just can't seem to figure out the cause...
