Exclamation Post Nissen Fundoplication Burning

My mother, age 60, had the nissen fundoplication surgery in Dec. 2008. She was told that she would be cured of her acid reflux. Things proceeded according to plan but now she has this intense burning in her esophagus and throat. Pain medication doesn't help. She's tried liquid mylanta, aciphex, and nexium with no success. Has anyone else had this happen or have any ideas on how to ease the burning?

Re: Post Nissen Fundoplication Burning

There is no easy answer. The burning after the surgery isn't normal. Has she been back in to see her Gastro or Surgeon about this since the surgery? She may need a pH test or EGD to verify that it is the reflux and to see of the wrap has come undone. Did she have the 360 wrap? If so, it may not be tight enough. Is she watching what she is eating, sleeping on an incline, not eating before bed, etc... All the homeopathic stuff for reflux?

You might browse the acid reflux board to get some ideas.

On the Nexium and Aciphex, did she take them once per day or twice? For the LPR symptoms in the throat, twice a day PPI's is most effective, although it doesn't typically eliminate the symptoms completely, it does help though.

I wish your mom well.

By the way, I had a Nissen last October. I've had some belching, but no burning.

Re: Post Nissen Fundoplication Burning

Thanks for the quick reply!

She has been following the "diet" and never sleeps flat. She's been taking the PPI's twice daily. And, she has an appointment with her Gastro next week.

She's currently in a lot of pain though so we were curious to see if anyone else had the same thing happen and if so, what the cause turned out to be or what they did to help with the pain.

I'll check out the acid reflux board. Thanks for the suggestion. Glad to hear that your nissen went well!
