An upper GI does not require you be put to sleep, you will have to drink some barium while they do the xray. It is usually not painful, the barium can burn a little but nothing you can't handle. Hope it goes well for you.
I think if they thought you had cancer they would do more the an upper GI, it can only show so much. They probably want to see if you have acid reflux.
