food still in stomach after 13 hours

Yesterday I went in for an endoscopy. I have been in for one three times before and have had no problems with my doctor finding any food in my stomach. Unfortunatly he said that my stomach was full of food when he went in yesterday. I had not eaten anything for 13 hours prior and drank water 10 hours prior. I was wondering if anyone knows why food would still be in the stomach after 13 hours.
can anyone help me?

I don't know what you had the endoscopy for, if you've been having digestive problems recently, maybe gastroparesis? (literally translated it means 'stomach paralysis')

It's damage to the vagus nerve that slows or even stops the muscles of the stomach from working properly. Diabetes is the most common cause, but also viral illness, autoimmune diseases, Fibromylgia, or damage to the vagus nerve from abdominal surgery. Symptoms might include nausea, feeling full after eating a tiny bit, heartburn, bloating and erratic blood glucose levels.

Re: food still in stomach after 13 hours

They'd probably start you off with a medication that stimulates stomach muscle contractions like Reglan. The antibiotic Erythromycin also improves stomach emptying. Gastroparesis has a habit of coming and going away all by itself, so you might feel better in time even without medication. It depends on how bad your symptoms are.

The real treatment would depend on what's causing the gastroparesis - like diabetes or an injury from an old surgery, etc.

Here's an info page on gastroparesis: http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/gastroparesis/index.htm

Re: food still in stomach after 13 hours

I went in for an endoscopy to find out if I have celiac. I have also been diagnosed with F.A.P where more than 400 precancerous polyps are found in the large intestine. Last year I had my large intestine removed.
I was also scheduled to have the polyps in my stomach removed during this endoscopy as they were apparently abnormal yet my doctor could not do that and said i would see him in 6 months
