My weird stomach gives me a headache

My stomach had been through some problem since I was 16 (8 years ago), and I think that was due to a long time depression. The major problem was that there was always some gas coming up to from my stomach to my throat, like a burp, but not so strong. The most weird thing is that sometime when I had a headache or backache, there will also be some gas coming up from my stomach when I was massaging my back or head, and this happens more often when I am exhausted.

Recently, I found out that whenever I ate something that I could not digest well, my stomach will have a gas problem and left side of my head will ache, also make me feel tired and sleepy, I even couldn't work anymore when I got that headache. If I forced my self to throw up the food left in my stomach, I will immediately feel better. Since last month, I found out that hamburger, peanuts, sunflower seeds, sausage, fries, fried breaded chicken, some cheese and seaweed will all get stuck at my stomach, cannot be digested and give me a severe headache, although I didn't have any problem with these foods before. Now seems that the only thing I can eat is bread and rice. I went to the doctors several times but they couldn't figure out what's wrong with my stomach since all the examinations were fine. I wonder if someone has useful information about this and thanks for your help!

Re: My weird stomach gives me a headache

hi, new with this site. I have same problem- gas causes severe headache & neckpain. Until I burp(goes away until gas builds up, then burp...) Redsand, your thread is 5 months old, did you find out what's wrong? My docs don't know. I did find out that if I eat proteins and fats, which does not create gasses when mixed with enzymes in my stomach, i don't have a problem. So I go easy on carbs. Also, I am beginning to have a problem with milk(maybe coats my stomach lining, and puts it in overdrive to excrete stomach juices??). and now chocolate.. this is hell. any news?

I read your comments with interest. I had no idea anyone else suffered with the same thing. I have neck soreness and headache pain, sometimes going into one eye, that bothers me now every day. And it has to do with gas in my case too. I find it unbelievable that if I pass some intestinal gas my headache can go away immediately!

Maybe this will help you: a few months ago I cut all gluten out of my diet because I read that gluten can be the cause of chronic headaches. My headaches disappeared for that whole time. About a week ago they started up again. This is really tough.

When the headaches start I get a strong desire for carbs of some type. I try to keep that under control, but I feel I need to have at least SOME. I just now ate some thin corn cakes (like rice cakes) with a little honey on each one. I had that with coffee, and I feel less headache-y, but that is not a real solution. The headaches comes back. Please write more of your experiences. Maybe we can figure out a way to solve this. This is what is so great about the Internet. You can find people who have the same issues. Doctors have no clue that this phenomenon even exists.

Re: My weird stomach gives me a headache

Hi, its nice to know that someone else is having the same issues. I thought I was the only one. this usually used to happen to me 1x every 1-2months, but the last month it has been almost everyday and my head feels like it is going to split open. No help with GI specialist, she thinks I should cut out gluten and dairy, which is very difficult to do. I wish there was a test to do to see if that is what is causing the problem. Have you learned anything new??

Let me tell you what I found out. I began to get increasingly nauseous; this in addition to the usual gas, headaches, etc. It got so bad I went to the emergency room. They did a CT-Scan and discovered that I had diverticulitis, surprising to me because I eat a good diet, no junk food. I was put on IV antibiotics and later sent home with 10 days of oral antibiotics. I felt much better. This gas/headache problem of long standing has disappeared. I think I had a low-level diverticular infection for years, and that was the cause of this problem in my case. If it hadn't finally become acute I would never have discovered what was going on. I'm not saying you have the same problem; I don't know, but in my case this is what happened.

As far as gluten and dairy goes. I eat dairy. I had cut out gluten because I felt it contributed to my headaches. It is possible I may at some point reintroduce gluten to my diet since my body is under much less stress now not fighting the diverticulitis infection and could possibly tolerate gluten. I hope this helps you.

Re: My weird stomach gives me a headache

Thank you for the info. My headaches get so bad that at times I have thought of going to the ER, but in the end I do nothing about it thinking they will do nothing. I'm always hearing how the ER tends to send you home with meds for the symptoms but not really looking into the problem.

My doctor at the ER told me they were glad they found what was wrong; sometimes they can't find anything. I went to Northwestern Memorial in Chicago. They appear to be very thorough there, or at least they were with me. Some ER's are better than others. You should try to find out which one near you will really do a good job. If I had it to do over I would have insisted on an MRI instead of the CAT-Scan because MRIs have no radiation. In the future I will ask for an MRI. I told various doctors about my symptoms over the years, but none had any suggestions. Once I got to the ER they did many tests on me, and the CAT-Scan revealed the diverticulitis. I had had many exotic theories what was wrong with me, but it turned out to be pretty clear-cut and simple.
