Scared and don't want gallbladder surgery

I do not want to have surgery. I have had many surgeries. Hysterectomy, partial thyroid surgery, breast lump benign, caracts, and now gallbadder. I had a HIDA scan showed 13% function. I had a colonoscopy a couple days before and had a couple of polps removed, benign but the type that turn to cancer if not caught in time. I have hashi's. I have read that hypothyroidism can cause gallbladder problems. I am wondering if an adjustment to my meds can help my gallbladder. I have heard so many negative things about gallbladder removal. I already have electrolyte imbalances and vitamin absorbtion problems, which I read gallbladder removal causes. I also read about weight gain. I am now struggling to keep my weight down after gaining 30lbs after the thyroid surgery. I am so very scared and I sure could use some advice, pleeease. karen

Re: Scared and don't want gallbladder surgery

Sorry to hear about your gallbladder and other thyroid problems, but I sure am glad your G.I. caught the polyps and removed them! It is your doctor's responsibility to give you all the facts and then it's your decision whether or not to have the gallbladder surgery. For what it's worth, I am the biggest chicken in the world and I had mine removed Feb.1, 2011 and it's the best thing I could have done, I believe it saved my life as I was in such pain and misery with a non-functioning gallbladder and also sludge and polyps on the gallbladder as well. It was scary because it was my first and only surgery, but in retrospect, it was not a horrible experience at all. Just try to have someone stay with you for a few days and have fat free foods available and no heavy lifting.

I have not gained excessive weight from the surgery and it's been 6 months post op. I needed to gain back some of the weight I lost from being so sick prior to surgery.

I had mine removed laparascopically and was home 6 hours later. You will probably be uncomfortable from the incisions for awhile, and I had post-op gas pains, but it helped to keep walking up and down the stairs. I took Vicodin and stool softeners and Promethazine for nausea for 2 days, after that I only needed an occasional Advil. It took awhile to get my appetite back, but I drank a lot of water and walked as much as possible. By the time I had my 2 week check up, I felt pretty good. Your digestion may be weird for awhile, all I can say is try to avoid all fatty, greasy fried foods and sauces. On the other hand, you may be one of those people who recover rapidly, my 85 year old mother was up and back to work 2 days later! Good luck to you, whatever you decide to do.
