excessive belching and chest pains in left side CURE (for me)

So I had experienced this problem for over a year. Not sure how it came about, but possibly from eating quesadillas with pepper jack cheese every day for lunch for a few months has something to do with it...

My symptoms sounded a lot like what other people had posted on forums: chronic belching after meals, horrible acid feeling in my throat, throbbing pains in the left side of my chest (felt almost like that feeling you get in your stomach when you're on a roller coaster, but just in my left side...the stomach side). I thought it was bad acid reflux so I took a bunch of over the counter things to remedy it: Pepto Bismol, Tums, Prilosec, etc. I started trying all kinds of different acid reducers, thinking one of them was the right one for me.

The belching soon got really bothersome. I would sometimes go for a full day with out eating anything because I just didn't have an appetite and I knew if I took one bite of food, it would immediately trigger deep, chest belches.

I finally went to my naturopathic doctor because it was getting quite painful and annoying, and he diagnosed me with HYPOACIDITY. It's not very well represented on the internet, but it's basically too little stomach acid in my stomach. I imagine all of the acid reducers I was taking had dropped my stomach acid level down so low that I had gone too far the other way. My doctor said that I basically had undigested food that was putrefying (gross) in my stomach and any time I ate something it would aggravate the mix and release gas, causing the powerful burps. He prescribed me 2 natural supplements: Ulcinex and Metagest. I took each pill 3 times a day, usually with meals. Each pill bottle had 90 pills, and I did two rounds of the medicine over the span of about 2 months. It fixed me right up! They're natural supplements so they take a little while to work on the body, but basically the Ulcinex was re-upping my Hydrochloric acid levels in my stomach so I could digest food properly. The Metagest also aided with digestion. Taking these pills with meals everyday also forced me to work on eating 3 square meals every day (with little to no snacking in between) and that kind of regularity with meals also helps maintain decent digestive health. I also tried to eat healthy, non-junk food type things like fruits and vegetables. I'm not saying this is what cured me because ANYTHING I ate before I started taking the pills would cause my burping, but it certainly doesn't hurt to eat more fruits and veggies.

I feel 100 times better now. I still have some big belches, but it's usually after I overeat. And I no longer HAVE to belch every time after a meal just to relieve the aches and pains in my gut. I definitely recommend consulting a doctor (or a naturopathic doctor) because maybe you have something different, but I had read so many posts on other forums about people basically being life-long takers of acid reducing pills, and I had to share my solution for my problem.

Hope this helps someone out!

Re: excessive belching and chest pains in left side CURE (for me)

It is very interesting to read your post. I am glad to hear your doctor was able to help you with this problem!

I had exactly the same symptoms and after being mis-diagnosed with Acid Reflux, Gasteroparesis, Esophigitis among other things, and being put on PPI's, and various other drugs, it took doctors 2 years to figure out it was my gallbladder not functioning! Even after having my gallbladder removed, I still had a belching problem. I had to change my diet radically, I still eat low fat and have trouble with some raw veggies and citrus fruits, coffee and tea, but I learned that if I chew my food very carefully and I am meaning chewing each mouthful about 50 times and eating very slowly, I no longer have any belching problems and no medication needed!

That's really interesting that you say that. Just before I did get on the pills I did try things like chewing food thoroughly. I definitely tried to chew my food into a liquid-y mush, and I did things like: eat smaller portions. It really does help and I know the doc also recommended it to me along with the pills. Change in diet helps too. Our problems may be different but maybe not.

That was the other freaky thing; Other people would say they had needed to see gastro-specialists or have surgeries or other semi-invasive procedures and that didn't sound like a good time. Let's keep staying healthy!

Unhappy Re: excessive belching and chest pains in left side CURE (for me)

Hi It was so nice to hear that your belching has reduced. I too have lot of belching. Iam new to this forum and have been searching for my GERd problem. I do not have any pain in my chest or stomach.
Iam having GERD since 2 years. Last year I was on PPIs and then stopped them. This year I have really very bad GERD and I belch a lot continuously through out the day. I have been to the gastroenterologist and had an upper endoscopy done and was told my LES is wide open . My biopsy and blood test result were normal. Doctor prescribed Protonix and sent me home saying that might be aerophagia. I did not want to start PPI again. So went on natural supplements like DGL,zinc carnosine, magnesium, bcomplex, Chamomile tea. These worked a little bit for a week but again Iam having bad belching. I belch several times every 4 minutes. If my day is bad I belch every second. Its being so hard that my throat pains a lot and I cannot go outside either. Iam always home due to my problems. I take gasex , but it hardly helps.

My belching and gas gets worst during my menstrual cycle and no antacids nor gasex helps . I will be sick for the whole 1 week before and during my menstrual cycle. I get bad headache when I have lot of gas and belching. headache goes only when all the gas comes out through belching. I tried Charcoal tablets too , they help when the reflux is mild. Sometimes I get very big belches that my throat hurts. I chew my food properly and I have given up all the triggering foods. Iam on a very low diet , and I eat very little (only a little bit of rice) . My belching is severe 2 hours after my meal and everyday I wake up with headache and gas with belching. My life has become miserable. Iam Anemic now and not able to do my daily activities .Iam not able to even take care of my kid as Iam sick everyday and cant even eat food and feel so dizzy.

I have been to a naturopathic doctor and he has suggested me homeopathic medicine. Have been using it since two weeks, but have no improvement.....
I was also told to use castor oil pack on my abdomen, have been doing that. Did anyone try this and found any result?Even started breathing exercises.

Does anybody have a suggestion please. Are there any suggestions for strengthening the LES to work normally again?

Again, I would check with a doctor to see if it's ok in your system, but I would try Ulcinex and Metagest 3 times per day (6 pills total, 3 of each). The Ulcinex is the key because (from what I understand) it reintroduces Hydro Chloric acid into your stomach, which helps break down your food and gets rid of the belching. Good luck!
