here is my question: if EVERYTHING i eat makes me extremely bloated is it still possible i have a food intolorance? in other words will eating a food you have an intolorance to cause other foods you eat to make you bloat as well? what do you think and have you faced this before and if so what are some common food intolorances that could cause extreme bloating?

Re: food alleergies

If your stomach is irritated from a food intolerance, it could react badly to all food. Or, it could be something else causing your bloating.

The most common food intolerances are dairy (milk) and gluten (grains.) Eliminating dairy temporarily is pretty easy, going gluten-free is trickier since people with gluten sensitivity must avoid all foods with even a trace amount of gluten.

well i have been tested for celiacs, parasites, bacteria, and had a cat scan all came back normal.i'm asking for answers because i suddenly became extremly bloated in back june and it hasnt gone away. but thats why i ask because i did breifly give up gluten for about a month back in august and it seemed to help a little and more then anything else has helped but i guess i didnt give it a long enough chance. then i got really bad again like pregnant looking. so i gave up gluten again starting 3 days ago. but thats why im asking because ever since this started it is literally everything i eat no matter what or how much that makes me bloated. a handful of raisens, a snickers bar (snickers are among the few gluten free candy bars) or a cup of cofee anything even in small amounts makes me bloat. so i dont understand if i have a food allergy or what. o yeah bloating only symptom no diareah no acid no constipation. to show i am not exagetating here are 2 photos one of my stomach normal and one of my stomach bloated.

o yeah and i am taking many probiotics different ones good ones, obviously not helping.
i take fennel seeds and fennel tea it helps to some extent.
digestive enzymes seem to help when i pop about 20 of them i can eat a banana.

Re: food alleergies

Bless your heart. Dr. Oz had something on recently about small bowel obstruction. I think that drastic difference must be something more than Gluten/Celiac. I was doing Gluten free for 2 months and couldn't tell a difference...then I realized my diet coke had sweetener that had glluten in...Argh...it's everywhere. Now I can tell a BIG difference.
Hang in there.

Re: food allergies

Hi,
I am in recovery from an eating disorder and I heavily abused laxatives on and off for about 6 years.

I know on your other post you said you didn't like to talk about it, but I have experienced this kind of bloating. It seems to be from the laxatives/diuretics.

Eliminating food etc.. is not going to solve the problem if you are still using the laxatives/diuretics.

There is no need to give up certain food and hold on to the hope that eliminating it will decrease the bloating. The food is not the problem.

Giving laxatives was the MOST difficult thing I have ever done! I was bloated for several weeks-maybe, longer and I had to wear baby-doll shirts. I looked like I was pregnant.

If you have been using them a long time, please go to your doc. so they can help you come off them correctly.

hugs

Re: food allergies

ok thanx however, i have never ever abused laxatives in my life. ive never made myself throw up wither. just starved myself a lot sometimes. and my abuse of diuretics was excessive yes but it was on and off from when i was about 19 til recently. i stopped using them when this bloating thing started because they didnt do a thing for me anymore. so im really not doing anything wrong now. i do wonder though if my abuse of diuretics in the past or if my long time low calorie intake is somehow messing with my body now. i def had weeks in a row of eating like 600 calories a day. because like i said im not even to sure if this is bloating from gas or water or what. o and i had a catscan there is no obstruction.

and dont worry rest assured i am eating good now. i had eating disorder because i was obsessed with looking good and thin. i would freak out if i was a tiny bit bloated in the morning from pizza and wings the night before. but now looking back i was very lucky to not have the beach ball i have now. imagine how this awfullness is effecting me. i literally dont go out anymore with friends i sit home and cry i broke up with my boyfriend because i feel so disgusting and unattractive.

and im sure all of you understand doctors tend to laugh at me and tell me its all in my head which hurts so much

Re: food allergies

o and let me add my diet the past few years was not too healthy. one candy bar a day. or one slice of pizza a day. or one cheeseburger a day. it was always a very small amount of very unhealthy food. hardly any meat fruit vegatable grains. mostly fast food junk food but very small amounts. i guess you could say i was anorexic but im not to sure if i was.

Re: food allergies

Intense calorie restriction can cause long-term damage to the GI tract, and I think that may be what happened to you. The fact that digestive enzymes seem to help may confirm it.

Now, it might not be the sort of damage that shows up on a cat scan. It might be a neuromuscular thing, or a change in the bacterial or chemical composition of your bowels.

In my opinion, many GIs are too ready to shrug and give up once they figure out the problem isn't fatal. If the patient is continuing to make the time to see them, it's because the patient is really troubled by it.

It may be that a nutritionist or naturopath could be of more help. Also, you may want to see a counselor to help you with the effects this is having on your emotional health, because it sounds like the effects are profound.

Re: food allergies

i dont think my insurance will cover anyone but a gi. and ive gone to the er and seen my pcp. they refered me to the gi specialist back in september still waiting for my apointment its on nov 17 everyday i call to see if anyone canceled and can they get me in sooner. so yea i dont know what to do. eat more eat less? a lot of thiongs im reading online say if you get to a healthy weight it will reverse so me being 5"9 125 that means i should be around 145+. but i dont see how gaining weight will help me. im thinking like some kind of physical therapy for my stomach haha. i think i am just going to start eating more. ive always had like 1 meal a day max and i felt it was a lot lot lot. maybe now i will eat breakfast lunch and dinner. maybe at set times everyday. and im scared of how it will be to tell gi i think this is from eating disorder. all i have is you guys i cant tell anyone!! my whole life ive never told anyone! people had susp[icions because they never saw me eat but no one really pushed it.

Re: food allergies

In a way, eating more can be physical therapy for the stomach!

The GI tract is made up of muscles. When you don't eat, the muscles can get weak and confused.

Now, if you've been living on one snickers bar a day, eating Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow is not a good plan. But see what happens if you eat 3 small-to-medium-sized meals each day. A cup of cereal with milk for breakfast, a sandwich with something on the side for lunch, etc. It'll be uncomfortable at first, but it might get better as your digestive system gets back in the habit of processing food.

Recent changes in insurance law call for mental-health parity, meaning your insurance company WILL cover you to talk to a counselor. Trust me, your family knows something is wrong, even if they don't know what. Get counseling, it'll help.

Re: food allergies

my family really doesnt know anything is wrong they know i am very skinny sometimes my brother says wow you look sick but i havent lived with my family since i was 18 and i have always been very good to eat around certain people! family my mom my brother and friends i always made sure i gave no sign of not eating even if i ate a small amount in fron of them at a function who would notice. i had a therapist but i never ever told her about my eating disorder. in a way it just became part of my life i kinda put it in the back of my mind. my goal the whole day was not to eat a lot. looking now i def had a much bigger problem then i perceived. if i ate 2 small meals a day i felt horrible like i was a big fata** and i am shocked now because you how some websites have like a calculator you put in weight and height and it tells you how many calories you need? apparently just to maintain my weight of 120 or 125 and being 5"9 i can have about 1990 calories a day and that is at a sedentary level of activity! i must have been in some sort of starvation mode and never relized it. i did have my times of eating a lot though i def divulged on holidays in front of my family but i made up for it the days before and after by eating nothing.
this is all so confusing
im also confused because ive always gotton my period. it never stopped just came late sometimes. ive had 4 miscarrieges though one at 16 one at 18 one at 20 and one at 22. i didnt change my eating habits while pregnant but i did try but looking back now i probly thought i was doing fine eating 2 small meals... holy cow

ive never faced these demons untill this bloating thing started. i just feel so bad about myself i always have. i hate my body even when i was thin i have such a small chest and always had acne problems.

i dont wanna be anorexic i want to be normal i dont want to do this anymore i am willing and ready to eat the 1990 calories a day to maintain my normal weight. and im gonna do it. guess i should hit the grocery store my fridge is pretty empty. i wonder if eating normal will help me. maybe i should take it slow?

Re: food allergies

Some women lose their periods from losing weight, but some do keep menstruating even when dangerously thin. In general, 5'9" and 120 pounds is badly underweight, and your low weight may have something to do with your miscarriages, I'm afraid.

I think that your digestion will improve if you return to more normal eating habits, I really do. Bloating is a symptom of starvation, after all.

Online support is a great thing. But in-person support helps, too. Initially I thought that you'd recovered from your eating disorder a while ago, but you are still very low weight. You may need medical advice to cope with the effects of long deprivation safely.

Re: food allergies

yes i never put the two together but it was back in may that i decided to start eating more. i really dont know so i did start eating a little more. and in june this bloating thing started so naturally i went back to not eating because i didnt want to be bloated.

yea i guess my weight is unhealthy. i tried to talk to my mom about this earlier she kinda avoided the conversation. she is kind of wrapped up in my little brother hes girlfriend is gonna have his baby next month. probly one the only things made me happy in a long time. my poor brother sept 2010 our dad died right in front of me because his pancreas burst he drank to much. i had a miscarriege the next day. and 2 weeks before that my brothers best friend was killed in a car accident. now hes gonna have a baby. a boy. so maybe my mom kinda always knew i had problems. but shes wrapped up in everything else. i dont know, i have a kind of messed up family as you can see.. i do feel real alone with this i wish i could tell someone i know but if i do the whole thing will just kinda spiral out of control. i have one friend i can tell knows. shes not stupid and she saw me abuse diuretics a lot. but im scared to talk with her about it.

i ate a real breakfast today. and a real lunch. now what about dinner. i have to stick with this i want to feel better!!!

good news to i got my first apointment with the gastro changed from nov 17 to nov 2 !!!!!

so any advice on what to tell the gastro? should i just be completly honest?

Re: food allergies

Well, I'm going to eat 3-4 ounces of pasta with pesto for dinner, with probably some kind of vegetable on the side.

Do be honest with the GI. You have to, or else he can't help you.

He probably already suspects. He knows you are too thin.
