Need help, don't know what to do!

I've had stomach/digestive disorders since I can remember, and I'm 25 years old now. But lately it's been getting worse and worse. I had diarrhea 4 times today and I've had it at least 2-3 times every day for the last couple months. On rare occasions it clears up and my BM's become firmer, but otherwise it's always diarrhea.

I don't know what's wrong, as I meet symptoms for IBS, UC, Chron's, and Celiac Disease and I can't narrow it down.

Here's a list of my symptoms:

1) Severe acid reflux, worse when laying down. Causes agonizing, crippling pain when I get an attack.

2) Moderate to severe abdominal pain on all sides, but mostly lower. Lots of rumbling and noise most of the day. Pain is mostly sharp and stabbing. Pain is usually an indication I have to go relieve myself very shortly.

3) Weird, random pains on my left and right sides near pancreas/liver. Pain is sharp and stabbing. Doesn't happen a lot, but when it does it's gradual and can last up to an hour. My upper-right abdomen was actually warm to touch the other day for some reason.

4) Increased passing gas over the last month or so.

5) Severe diarrhea, as described above. I have a bowel movement with diarrhea at least 2-3 times a day.

6) Certain things I eat cause immediate stomach cramps and abdominal pain. For example, had Chinese food a couple days ago and within 30 minutes of eating I was running for the bathroom and in immense pain. I know this isn't food poisoning, as it happens with other/different meals as well. All varying.

The biggest thing for me is the pain. I've taken anti-diarrheal medicines and they don't seem to help much. Pepto Bismol works miracles when I'm having an acid attack and minor stomach pains.

Even while I'm typing this I'm getting sharp pains in my upper-middle abdomen that go from side to side. Accompanied by the rumbling/bubbling noises.

Anyone have any idea what's wrong with me? I know you all may not be doctors, but any insight is appreciated.

Re: Need help, don't know what to do!

I had similar symptoms to you. Turned out I couldn't eat any sort of dairy foods. I'm what they call lactose intolerant. It could be the same for you. Try eliminating all dairy from your diet for a week or two and see how it goes. You have to really careful and read all the ingredients in all food stuffs. If it's not dairy, it could be something else I guess. Good luck.

Your symptoms do relate to IBS, I have IBS and when I get a flare up I will have a number of your symptoms.
Have you tried COLOFAC it is for IBS and I found it helpful.
It might be a good idea to get checked for H.Pylori as I had a lot of your symptoms when I had that as well.
You should see your Dr for a correct diagnoses and the appropriate treatment.

JanaJ,

Thanks for the reply. However, I don't believe it's lactose intolerance. I drink milk quite often to help with my acid reflux and it never causes me any direct problems.

No I haven't tried anything as I never go to the doctor. If it's not Pepto or Tums then I probably have never taken it. But I'll have to take a look at it.

What do you do to manage the pain?

Re: Need help, don't know what to do!

I think you need to get some blood work done to check your liver enzymes.
If the pain is that unbearable it could be pancreatis and a simple blood test will confirm that. Pancreatitis can cause diaherra. Otherwise, my IBS is terrible if I don't take a proboitic. I take one Align every night and it helps a great deal.
Good luck and feel better Linda

Re: Need help, don't know what to do!

I used to drink plenty of milk as well. I was totally unaware that milk was causing my digestive problems. It was only when I stopped it for two weeks that I found out.

Your symptoms are so similar to what mine were, I would definitely suggest you try eliminating milk from your diet. If that doesn't work try something else.

Re: Need help, don't know what to do!

Hi RyanM,
I sugest you see a Dr and find out whats going on.
You could have Diverticulitis but that would depend on your age as it is more likely in middle age + people.
I have it and Diareah is a strong symptom also pain with it.
An Ulcer is always a possibility but dont guess at your condition and see your Dr.
I wish you well.

Re: Need help, don't know what to do!

One day a couple years ago, I woke up one morning in a new body. This new body looked like my old one, healthy and fit, but my entire digestive system was replaced during the night with that of a 90 year old woman. Suddenly I had urgent diarrhea up to 5 times per day, a lot of times during or right after eating, and I had endless rumbling and gurgling throughout my intestines, often worse after eating.

So after a few months of urgent D attacks and getting thinner and more fatigued as days went by, I went to my first doc. As soon as I mentioned 'diarrhea,' he diagnosed IBS-D and prescribed bentyl before kicking me out. At this point, I've seen 2 gastro specialists several times, my GP who also agreed it's "IBS" INSTANTANEOUSLY after hearing 'diarrhea,' and I've had all sorts of fun tests. Guess what! NO diagnosis!

I've never had pain with mine (thank goodness!), just mild cramping every now and again, a dull pain behind my left-side ribs once in a while... but the gurgling is so uncomfortable and loud. One time my boyfriend and I both heard my intestines say "Boooooooooyyyyyyyyyyy!" Yes, it said 'Boy.' In a creepy way. Somehow my intestines produced a 'B' sound. I assume my intestines can squeeze together since that is the case. They've also clearly said other random words that surprise me and make me laugh in embarrassment. Maybe it's my second identity?

Anywho, things I've tried with the results= 1) Bentyl - Helpful, very sedating, calms intestines a bit. 2) Imodium - Helpful, takes a day to kick in and slow my system down, but then works okay. I still feel panic while using it, like there's still 'looseness' going on inside. 3) Lomotil - Worked the first week I used it, now not so much. Hit or miss, but did stop the D for a short period. Gurgling was heavy during use. 4) Probiotics - Culturelle helped a lot for a week, even stopped the gurgles and firmed up stool. Then the effect wore off, however I continued for a year on it. 5) Align, Phillips Bowel Health, Digestive Advantage, etc etc - Bleh! Increased stool output dramatically, worsened urgency. Miserable. 5) Multi enzyme + Betaine HCL supplements - Helpful with meals, dulls the after-eating gurgles. Firms the next day's stools if you remember to use EVERY time you eat. 6) Cholestyramine - Helpful? Worked a bit better than fiber supplements at adding bulk to stool. I still feel like D all the time, but it's a BIT firmer. 7) Soluble fiber supplements - Not much help, only slight if anything. 8) Calcium carbonate supplements - AWFUL! Almost instant burning yellow acid D while using, despite trying 4 different brands and formulations. 9) Gluten Free diet - Good results if only eating home made foods, meats, veggies. CANNOT eat any prepackaged GF mixes, etc. They cause me awful D.

That's all I remember trying the past 2 years. I still suffer every single day and it inhibits my now 29 year old lifestyle. Anyway, maybe one of these remedies will help you. Many of them are OTC so you can try before going to a Doc.
