Sudden Constipation

Began with moderately severe pain in the abdominal region between the bottom of my sternum and the umbilicus which resolved in 3 days. I can pass stool, but it is small and hard to pass. I saw my doctor, who after examining and questioning me, recommended an OTC stool softener. All this did was make the pain return. I also tried eating a large serving of oatmeal. I do drink several large cups of black tea every day. Nothing is helping to make passing stools any easier and I'm getting hemorrhoids. My doctor's office is now closed for the holidays. Any suggestions as to what I can try now? Thanks.

First of all, I would suggest that you go to an urgent care center or the ER. I'm going by my own experience with bowel problems, which I've had to live with since I was a baby.

I don't know what could cause sudden constipation. It may have been something you ate, or it could be something else. If your doctor can't see you, go to another source now.

Re. constipation, I found that drinking more water helps. So does exercise if you are able. I haven't been able to do much walking because I had recent surgery and am having other medical issues.

Please keep us posted on how you're doing!
