June 2011 I, too, experienced these problems. June/start of july. I was sixteen then, seventeen now. It has been an ongoing problem, a terrible one. Ironically it all began AFTER I started getting healthy, exercising and eating right etc.
It's terribly depressing and distracting. I also experience a lot of (smelly) gasses.

To me breads and oats also seem to make things worse, however raw, fresh foods, fruits and vegetables, make things much, much better. For a short period I was actually raw vegan and this was when I felt the best. However, I would like to be able to eat normally.

I don't know what it is, and doctors are giving up on me as well. Next week I'm going to the gynaecologist. I hope to soon find and answer.
You could have Celiacs disease have you looked into it?

One of soloution of your problem is milk and hot water .simply use warm water to drink for three days before meal and don.t take water after meal . avoid alcohal and drinks like cola and use warm milk as it make stomach strong and clean. if you add honey in milk it cause more effective to you

I also wondered whether you have had tests to check that your ovaries are ok? Just might be worth checking. Also, have you considered that it might be ibs? I hope you're feeling better soon.

Re: Constant bloating/constipation/heartburn months after stomach infection

Hi all,

I started having these symptoms in around July 2011 as well. After a few months of no one taking me seriously they decided to test me for helicobacter (h.pylori) infection. It turned out I did have that stomach infection, and this was diagnosed in December 2011 and I was given antibiotics for a week which included three types of tablet. The first week after taking them seemed not too bad - my bowel movements seemed to pick up slightly, the bloatedness had gone down a little, and the acid reflux wasn't as bad. Another week and my symptoms came back in complete full force.

Since then, so the very start of this year, I have had seemingly worsening symptoms. I am constantly bloated, gassy, constipated, and have sometimes severe acid reflux. I have been sent for a gastroscopy, an upper abdominal scan, and a scan of my uterus and ovaries, all of which came back fine.

I feel like my doctor is not taking me seriously, as if he thinks I am just making it up - but for a healthy eating, fit and slim 24 year old to have an extended stomach so much so that a lot of the time it looks like I am five months pregnant, it's just not right.

About three months ago my doctor (after seeming exasperated that I was there yet again) all but told me he had given up on finding what was wrong with me. He had even tried giving me treatment for IBS, which didn't work. (I am a firm believer that IBS is a big general cover for many stomach disorders that doctors don't want to spend the money and time looking for). I broke down in his office, then, because I couldn't believe he wasn't taking this as seriously as he should. It affects my whole life - my self confidence is shot, I have had to buy loads of loose fitting tops and dresses because even something slightly tight can cause me so much pain and discomfort. Even vest tops irritate my stomach because they dont hang losely!!

He then decided he would refer me to a gastro specialist and I am still on the NHS waiting list.... when I rang them about 2 months ago to see how long I would have to wait the answer I got was "months not weeks", so god knows how long I will be waiting for!

This thread has been helpful, though, and I am about to purchase a couple of things to see if I can get some relief.

I hope everyone gets the help they deserve! Please keep posting about any solutions you find

UPDATE! Found something that helped me a bit!

I completely get your frustration! Its hard especially when people close to you are sick of hearing about it. I too believe that IBS is just a diagnosis when doctors run out of the only guesses they were taught in school. I also believe there is a root cause to IBS. Doctors are either just too lazy to search further to find it, or they just don't know what other avenues to take to find it. Holistic doctors/naturopaths I believe do know. (When I have the money, I will for sure see one.)

What's also hard, is that since June 2011, my symptoms have changed and evolved drastically. I have improved significantly since the start of it all, but still don't feel normal. I hate to sound vain, but most my symptoms would be tolerable if only my stomach would go back to normal!! Currently my symptoms are:

• stomach distention (if I dont eat right before bed, my stomach "feels" normal in the morning and is at its lowest point of distention all day)
• still a fair amount of gas (even though there's been periods this past year where I've had little to no gas for weeks)
• depending on what I eat, I get a tightness/general discomfort in the "actual" stomach area (center area between bottom of ribcage)
• constipation (gets worse the MORE I eat, and also the more carbs or fiber i eat.
• Stools hardly ever look normal and hardly even look the same. (Has been like this since Jan/Feb...though throughout the past year I've had months where my stool has looked perfectly normal. It usually has a yellow color to it, but not always.)
• I often get a light wave of nausea and/or lower back discomfort as gas is making its way through me or right before the urge to have a BM. Once either is released the nausea/lower back discomfort goes away.
• Sometimes after eating I get tolerable pains at the tip of the bottom of my ribcage, on either side.
• Haven't had heartburn in a quite a while. Have had 2 REALLY bad moments in the past 2-3 months. This happened after eating foods that are never a problem for me, but also happened during 2 very stressful moments)
• Probiotics still don't seem to help, even making me really gassy (I've been taking the garden of life raw women's)
• Aside from the stomach distention, I still retain water around my midsection very easily and usually right after eating a solid meal. (Maybe right after a meal with carbs, now that I think about it.)
***I hate to say it but what's been helping me feel better alot is making a green drink every morning in my blender (spinach, kale, parsley, green apple, fresh lemon, sometimes a few strawberries), then for lunch having a protein shake (just the powder and water), and then a dinner with solid food. Maybe its the lack of solid food going through my system? But I don't want to eat like this forever

Anyways, I started paying attention to parasite symptoms in my searches and noticed many that I have/had (especially stomach distention). I never even looked into it while doing research, thinking "why would I have a parasite? I haven't left the country", but apparently it is not hard to get a parasite in the U.S. We can get them from sushi, fruits and veggies, even water. Dr. Oz has said that parasites are "incredibly common" and that "90% of Americans have/will have parasites in their lifetime."
After reading up on it I started to get scared that this could be my problem. Curious I bought a box of Paragone from vitamin shoppe and within a few days felt alot better. I have not passed any actual parasites (that i've seen) like many do when using it, but my stomach distention has gone down a bit and my general stomach comfort is good. I also have a BM once a day. I'm on my second full strength round of it, but during the 5 day break betw the 2 rounds, I felt myself return to how I was before starting it. So we'll see how it goes after these next 2 weeks. I really wish I had insurance/money for a naturopath to check to see if I really do have parasites

I'm also not sure if its the way I've been eating most days (2 liquid meals and 1 solid meal) or if its the paragone, but i've been finally losing a little bit of weight too.

Sorry so long, but I feel the more detailed I am the more likely someone can identify with it. Anyways, I'd love to hear updates from you ladies who are in the same boat!

Hi,

Thanks for the response, I totally feel for you. It's nice knowing you're not the only one out there with these problems, but it is sooo frustrating that none of us are getting the answers we need!

Every single symptom you are suffering from in your list are the same as the ones I suffer from, down to a T. From the posts on this thread I decided to buy Dr Schulze Intestinal Formula 1 Colon Cleanse detox, which does seem to help my bowel movements and I generally am not so bloated all the time, although I still have bad days and I still have all my symptoms, just to a slightly lesser extent.

Have you been tested for H. Pylori/Helicobacter infection? It's a bacteria that grows in the stomach and (apparently) easily curable through antibiotics. That's what I was initially diagnosed with and had treatment for, therefore I do think my symptoms are related to that infection because they are almost exactly the same as they were before I had the treatment! They have tested me since then and apparently I don't have it anymore, so I am completely baffled as to what's happened since taking treatment for it.

I would have thought you aren't as bloated when you have your green breakfast etc because you are eating less. I have a yogurt for breakfast and then a small bowl of cereal for lunch and find this helps, too. Again I do think it's because I have less food going through my system. It's really not a healthy aid to the problem is it! I, like you, get a lot worse the more I eat and especially when eating fibre. The doctors said to me previously I should eat more fibre to help BM and when I tried to tell him that it actually made my system more clogged up, I don't think he believed me!

I agree, I wish I had the money to see someone like the specialists you mention, because people like that generally have more knowledge of these things because they are passionate about it and they seem to be much more open minded!

I'm in the UK, and as we have NHS here I have been, and still am, on the waiting list to see a gastro consultant. Been waiting now for this consultant for around 2 - 3 months and still no word! If you call the hospital they just tell you they can't give you a time estimate as to when you will be seen. So for now it's self diagnosis!

The paragone sounds ok as a test, so I will google it and see if it's available in the UK and if I can get hold of it I will let you know how I find it, too.

You don't sound vain at all - I feel exactly the same - if my symptoms were the same but no bloating then I think it would be a lot easier to handle. It really knocks your self confidence when you're constantly worrying about your stomach being bloated.

Good luck, and do let me know how you get on, as will I!

Amy

Hey Amy! Any positive update on your health? Mine is pretty much the same as I last described. Oct was a really good month where I felt I was improving...no stomach discomfort after ANY foods, somewhat regular BM's, little bit flatter stomach. But then starting the beginning of this month I feel like how I was right before Oct Only thing that's really helping at all is taking the Mag O7 a couple times a week, which basically cleans me out like a laxative would.

Would love to hear how you are doing! Or anyone other posters' improvements!

Hello again! Sorry, I have not logged on for a while and so hadn't seen your post.

Glad to hear you have something that eases your symptoms, even if just a little. It's so difficult working around something like this!!

I am doing better than I was last year, I have a routine now of Lanzoprazole (which prevents my acid reflux - I get this on presription) one in the morning before I leave for work, and Dr Schulze's intestinal formula one capsule after my evening meal. I also don't eat breakfast, and for lunch have a low fat soup with a wholemeal pitta bread to keep the food I eat during the day minimal. Then a normal evening meal. This system seems to be working out quite well. Don't get me wrong, my symptoms are here constantly(!!) but I find that this routine with tablets and food eases them quite a bit and gives me more regular BM's. Suggest you try the Dr Schulze's formula, although I can't remember if you said you had already tried it? The lanzoprazole really eliminates the acid reflux, it's wonderful. I had a weekend without the tablets as my car broke down so I couldn't go and pick up my prescription, and wow what a difference!! The whole weekend I was bloated, very very acidic, and in a lot of pain. So I can definitely say on that front those pills are amazing.

Still do get bloated, but I find with regular BM's this is reduced significantly. The only problem is if I'm out to dinner and forget to take my evening capsule I'm completely messed up for a good week afterwards.

Saw a specialist at the end of last year who was very unhelpful, just said the same thing they always do "it's IBS and there is no treatment", so I've completely given up on them. A friend of my father's worked with an oriental medicine doctor who specialises in the stomach area, and she's convinced he will be able to help me. My next step was going to be chinese herbal medicine as I've heard great feedback on it, however he charges quite a hefty sum for the consultation so I am letting my purse recover from Christmas before I go and meet with him! I will let you know how it goes and maybe it's something you could look into too?

Take care,

Amy

Hi Amy! Just wondering how you have been doing and if you've recovered yet? I began seeing a naturopath this past february. Through her testing (biofeedback and muscle testing to name a couple) she verified that my digestive system was very screwed up and that I probably still had a low-grade infection all this time. She identified foods that I was reactive to, and I had to eliminate them for at least 6 weeks, and I also had to eliminate wheat, soy, dairy, sugar, nuts and seeds....she told me to read a book called Wheat Belly....READ IT!!!! Her healing methods focus on supplements and nutrition obviously. I thought it was going to be hell but it actually became easier the longer I went without eating those foods. So my meals mainly consisted of fish or chicken and vegetables, and fruit. Sounds boring but it honestly made all the difference in the world...I'm not the way I used to be before the infection, but when I eat that way, I don't bloat up very much and I never have pain and have little to no stomach discomfort. I still have what seems like a sluggish digestion when it comes to eliminating but taking wheat, sugar and dairy out of my diet and also taking magnesium supplements has helped tremendously and I now have at least 1 bm a day (unless I eat wheat, then I'm constipated for at least 3 days) I am still bummed my stomach isn't mearly as flat as it was prior to all of this and that I'm still not having easy bm's 3-4 times a day, but at least these are MAJOR improvements. The supplements she has me taking every day are vitamin d, a multi and b complex, fish oil, magnesium, and then 2 supplements I take with every meal, Beta TCP and Hydro-zyme which helps with digestion and with bloating. Let me know how you are doing and let me know if you want more info on what I'm taking or doing. In the meantime, try eliminating dairy and wheat (or just wheat at least) for at least a mont and see how you feel! Just because you do not test positive for celiac or gluten intolerance does not mean that you are not reactive to it, or that it's healthy for you! Also the problem is WHEAT, NOT gluten )

I basically have the exact same symptoms as all of you ladies, and just like the young lady I quoted, I used Paragone, and its the only thing that has helped me. (for reference, 5'4, 128 LBS, marathon/yoga/hiker/biker/ in shape, super healthy eater) I've been having my issues for about a year, and am on my 3rd round of Paragone. Symptoms dissipate after a few days of Paragone, and tend to come back about every 2 months. I know its not a perfect cure, but for all of us whose doctors are telling us we "dont look that bad" or "are probably about to menstruate" or "should try exercise" or "have IBD", its the best thing I've come across so far. Lets keep helping each other out ladies!!

Re: Constant bloating/constipation/heartburn months after stomach infection

This thread popped up on my facebook - I am amazed to find there are others with the same symptoms. I have suffered with bloating/gas/constipation for most of my adult life (I am 52 now). Unfortunately I don't have any answers to post. I have been to the gastro dr. and diagnosed with IBS-C. Basically I was told to stay away from the items that cause me discomfort and then on the other had to eat more fiber for the constipation. Hello - fiber causes me discomfort - gas, bloating and makes the constipation worse! Anyway, for about the last 10 years I have taken magnesium right before bed and it does help with the constipation. The magic number for me is between 800-1200 mg's. Doctors have suggested miralax - but the mag works better for me. Probiotics don't work for me, digestive enzymes don't help with the bloating. It's very frustrating and I have pretty much given up seeking help from doctors. I have tried all types of fiber - flax, psyllium, Metamucil, guar gum, acacia, smart fiber with no luck. I feel for all of you with this problem - sorry I don't have any good advice.

Hi Kelly2727 (and everyone else),

I guess I'm one of the only guys on here, but myself the past few years very similar symptoms to Kelly. In fact her symptoms are the only ones I've come across that are almost identical to me.

I've been reading and researching and it seems like sometimes problems in one area of the digestive system can cause symptoms in another area. Because of this, I plan to do a colonoscopy soon, since I have already done an endoscopy and other tests.

Kelly (or anyone else) - have you done a colonoscopy or even a "capsule endoscopy" yet?

Hi Kelly,

So pleased for you! I am the same as my last post really, and I'm currently waiting for an appointment with a dietician to see if they can do allergy testing etc. Hopefully I will get someone similar to your naturopath? In the meantime I am still using lansoprazole for the acid reflux and Dr Schulze's intestinal formula every night with dinner. If I get really bad trapped wind I've been using a massage technique which basically consists of starting with both hands at the bottom right of my stomach, and working my way up to the top of my abdomen, then across and back down the left side of my stomach. That really does help with trapped gas!

Thanks so much for letting me know how you're getting on, all that info is really helpful, I will spend the day looking into it all and might start next week on a month's wheat free diet! I assume rice is ok? I have read that rice is the least intrusive carb to stomach problems, so I think maybe I will eat fish or chicken with rice for dinners. Do you use any sauces at all or just plain meat?

Does your naturopath know if you'll always have to live on this diet, or will you be able to gradually re-introduce foods back into your diet?

Well done on finding someone so good!

Amy
