Gastric Ulcer

I was awaken at 1am 2 nights ago with stabbing pains above my belly button. My gall bladder was removed 10 years ago. The doctors ran test and said my pancrease is fine. I was diagnosed with an ulcer. Well here we are 2 days later and I am still having the pain. I was given carafate and protonix. How long before I start to feel some relief? Is there an "ulcer" diet? This is scary....

Re: Gastric Ulcer

It'll take about a month for carafate and Protonix to heal the ulcer, though you should get SOME relief within a few days.

Were you tested for h. Pylori? Some ulcers are caused by an infection that must be treated with antibiotics.

Yes, there is a diet. Bland, basically. Avoid anything acidic, spicy or high-fat. White rice, steamed veggies (no tomatoes!) and skinless chicken would be a good dinner, for example.

Re: Gastric Ulcer

I was put on protonix for my gastric ulcer in 2011.

I followed the ulcer diet, but I did not listen to the gastro doctor and kept drinking coffee, diet cokes, and warm/cold beverages.

My doctor had to switched my meds to Nexium at the beginning of 2012 because I kept having pain. (I know it was my fault because I didn't follow the liquid portion of the diet.)

I am doing much better, but it's still very hard to accept that I won't be able to drink coffee, cocoa, diet cokes, tea and warm/cold beverages

Call your doctor if you weren't given a diet. The list is long: spices, ketchup, mustard, pickles. I ate a lot of chicken and tuna in water last year.

Good Luck!!
