I'm kind of scared. Last Friday I started getting black tarry stools. Sunday it got worse and I went to the ER. They did bloods. Everything was normal, my vitals were good. They sent me home on Protonix (a PPI) and told me to see my doctor.
Saw the Doctor on Wednesday. Scheduled an upper GI for Monday because she thinks I have an ulcer. They drew blood again today to check my CBC.
I'm just rather scared about all this happening. And I'm scared of the Upper GI. I would love to talk to some of you who've had it done. Tell me what to expect? I won't remember it will I?
I'm not being knocked out knocked out. But I'm told I'll be so sedated there is a chance I will fall asleep during it
You mean the test where they stick a tube in your mouth to examine your stomach? I've had three, I don't remember anything from any of them. Woke up feeling fine.
It sounds like you might indeed have an ulcer. If it's bad enough to need it, they can actually put small instruments through the endoscope to stop the bleeding. Generally ulcers heal within 8 weeks with appropriate treatment.
Thank you! That is what they are doing. She said it was a 'GI Scope' ? And they were going to put a camera in there. I'm glad to hear that if that they can stop it during the endoscope if needed. I don't mind waiting I just want to know exactly what is going on and where the little bugger is.
I'm kind of scared still but hearing your story has helped a lot
I got the results of my blood test back. I don't have H Pylori. My hemoglobin was down some.
In other news? My stools are back to normal but I'm still having stomach pains. Waiting until Monday has me all worried about something bad happening over the weekend UGH
It might be that the bleeding stopped, hence normal stools, but it'll still take some time for the erosion to fully heal. (A month or two is typical.)
Until Monday, just eat small bland low-fat meals, and absolutely avoid anything with aspirin, Advil or other anti-inflammatories. In the unlikely event that things get worse, you can go to the ER.

Thank you. I've been eating bland meals and I don't take anti-inflammatories so we're good there
I'm just somewhat relieved to not be having black stools anymore. Even if I still have a long way to go on healing
