GERD? More? I need to know where to go from here...

Hi everyone,

I'm very new to digestive issues, and unfortunately I've had some pop up very suddenly as the beginning of this year.

I'll start out by saying:
I'm female
I'm 5' 6"
I weigh around 120 lbs.
I have no known allergies
I have no other known medical problems
I had a small kidney stone last March (no complications)

My digestive problems started around March of this year. I had given up soda for lent and started drinking fruit juices as a replacement. I was attending college and had recently gotten engaged.

I started noticing that almost immediately after eating in the mornings, I would feel extremely nauseous, (I never threw up during all of this even though sometimes I was sure I would) my heart would start pounding and I'd start to feel very panicky. For awhile, I was able to just go to the bathroom and I was fine the rest of the day. But going to the bathroom was abnormal. It was very smelly and it was either very hard or very soft. Of course, never consistent. I didn't think too much of it since I felt fine the rest of the day. I then started noticing that I ate A TON of food at night. I'm not sure if I really felt hungry, but I felt like I had to eat something, almost like I was never full. One night I ate so much that I felt extremely nauseous all night long (again, no throwing up).

I started getting use to the morning sickness and tried to not eat anything a few hours before bed because I was afraid I'd have to get rid of it by morning. After about a week of this, I started having heartburn. It usually only occurred at night and would keep me up. A few days later, I felt nauseous after eating anything and could no longer go to the bathroom to relieve my symptoms. I also had heartburn all day long. My throat felt tight and when I ate it felt like my food wasn't going down. My stomach felt very pressured and even after just a couple bites of food, I felt overly full. I had tons of gas, mostly burping but I had gas all of the time. I would sometimes have random pains on the left side of my body, right under my rib cage and even up into my rid cage. It felt like there were tiny needles in my stomach, poking it. The majority of my burning feeling occurs right in the middle of my body, right under my rid cage and also on the left side. Sometimes the pain reaches my back.

I started getting very weak, depressed, tired, irritated and I was in so much pain. The first time I went to the doctor I was told to take Zantac. That didn't help at all. After a few days, I was so weak that my mom ran me up to the hospital. They said that I had GERD and told me to take omeperzole with the Zantac.

Another strange thing I had (and still have) is the skin on the inside of my mouth is coming off. This has happened before any of these digestive symptoms, so the gastro doctors really aren't sure what's causing it or even if I need to worry about it (it's quite annoying though).

I had an EGD done with biopsies and everything was normal. I had these blood tests, CBC, CMP, TSH ad Celiac panel and everything there was normal. So I had a bunch of symptoms, but no actual cause yet.

After a couple weeks, I started feeling pretty good. I almost didn't notice my symptoms anymore. Though I was having very inconsistent bowl movements. I was constipated for almost 5 days. And with the constipation, I noticed a strange pain in my lower back, on the left side. The pain is located right above my pelvic bone. It feels almost like a dull burn. It's very strange. I have never felt anything like it.

But then, I did something very stupid. The school year ended, so I decided to stop taking the omeperzole to see if I was back to normal. After 2 days, my symptoms came back. And after 5 days off the medication, I started taking it again because I was so scared of going back to not being able to eat at all again.

My mom called the doctor and they said that I shouldn't be having symptoms anymore, so I went back (I've been seeing a gastro specialist, not my regular doctor). The doctor said that I looked a lot better since the last she saw me, but was concerned that I still felt symptoms. I was told to take 2 omeperzole per day (1 before breakfast and 1 before dinner) and then to rule out other things, I needed an abdominal ultrasound.

I started taking the double dose of omeperzole and had the ultrasound. I personally do not know the results, but the doctor said they would call if anything was abnormal and I have not gotten a call. I had the test Thursday.

I've been on the double dose of omeperzole for about 2 weeks and I don' t feel nearly as good as I did the first time. Right now, my lower back has a dull pain on both sides, I have heartburn right under my rib cage, my throat feels strange (like there's mucus and some burning stuff in it), I have been exhausted, the skin on the inside of my mouth is peeling, my lower abdomen hurts, I think I've been constipated, but I'm not sure and I just am overall depressed. I feel like I'm going to have this forever and that I'm always going to be in pain and have nausea. I really want to get a job this summer, but almost every 2 hours I'm going to the bathroom either to try and have a bowl movement or I feel like I'm going to vomit and never do.

Last night I woke up at 3 in the morning because my lower abdomen hurt really bad. I thought I had to make a bowl movement, but I never could, I just passed gas. I laid in bed feeling my abdomen rumble and hurt and I could hear tons of gurgling. I felt like I was going to vomit more than once, but again, never did. I had 2 bowl movements today, but both were from me waiting a LONG time and I never felt like I was fully done. Both times were a very small amount and it was soft, but not watery. My lower back hurts...

I just don't know where to go from here. I just have this feeling that I don't only have GERD... I've never had any problems like this before and I don't understand how something like this can happen so suddenly. I don't know what to do and I feel very helpless... Any help is appreciated...

I have acid reflux and constipation problems as well. Both problems have a lot to do with your diet.
Acid reflux gets worse when you lie down flat. I put my bed up on bed risers and I don't lie down for at least 2 hours after eating. Stay away from acidic, spicy, gassy, and fried foods as this makes the acid reflux symptoms worse. I found that L-glutamine powder twice a day helps and digestive enzymes also help along with the Prilosec for acid reflux.
I have had constipation problems all of my life and I am almost 51 years old. I can tell you from my own personal experience over the last what helps prevent constipation:
1. Drink water and lots of it. At least 64 oz. a day or more.
2. Slowly increase your fiber intake 25-35 grams a day over a two week period.
3. Take a fiber supplement like Citrucell or Metamucil in the morning and at night. Drink 1 8 oz. glass of water before taking the supplement and 1 8 oz. glass of water after taking it, to keep yourself from making your constipation worse.
4. Have a daily set time schedule for sitting on the toilet to have a bowel movement. I allow up to 30 minutes everyday to have a BM. If you drink enough water and eat enough fiber the day before then it should only take 2-5 minutes to have a BM and will most likely have up to 3 BM's a day. I do slow deep breathing exercises continuously until I have a BM as it helps relax all of your muscles which makes it easier and painless to go.
5. Drinking prune juice warmed in the microwave twice a day(in am and pm, 4 oz. each time) helps keep your bowels moving on a regular basis or 6 stewed apricots every morning at breakfast.
6. I can't allow myself go more than 48 hours without having a bowel movement or by the 3 rd day it hurts so much to force myself to go. By the 36 hour mark and I haven't had a BM,then I use a glycerin suppository to soften the stool inside the rectum so it doesn't hurt so much to go.
If I follow the first five steps everyday then I have no problems moving my bowels on a daily basis. When I get lazy for more then 1-2 days in a row then I am in trouble again with being able to go without a lot pain and agony.

Re: GERD? More? I need to know where to go from here...

Hi,
When I had most of your symptoms I was diagnosed with H.Pylori.
Ask your Dr to test you for this.
Have you seen a GI Dr as some of your symptoms relate to IBS. You need a full diagnoses.

Solofelix.
