Re: Mild chronic gastritis with focal Intestinal Metaplasia

Thanks, I only received the biopsy report but can't see my doc for a month so I'm assuming the best diet until then is one that avoids provoking gastritis (i.e. low fat, salt, grilled, gluten). I am going to avoid taking antacids until directed to by the doc as I am on thyroid meds which are blocked by antacids, but let me know if you have any further info. from your consultations.

I was also doing some research on this in a medical book and I saw this 'the types of gastritis that do not lead to atrophy may be associated with increased gastric acid secretion and duodendal ulcer. Mild IM may be present in the antrum. Consequently, the finding of IM on a gastric biopsy from the antrum is not clinically significant as regards cancer risk...." So I think if its associated with gastritis its far less bad. I also think having the IM in the antrum region is typically less suspicious than other areas, which I take comfort in! Thanks for your help!

Re: Mild chronic gastritis with focal Intestinal Metaplasia

Hi all, I have been diagnosed with Barrets esophagus. Then, I was told by another doctor that I do not have Barret's esophagus, but I have Focal Intestinal Metasplacia. She said it is likely to be benign...
I decided not to worry about it since the docotr said it is benign, but she did not said anything about following up with another endoscopy in a year or so. Is this something I need to pursue with another doctor?

The diagnosis of Barrett's Esophagus is pretty straight forward, and of course would never be confused with Focal IM. Unless you feel the first doctor was a complete idiot, I would get a third opinion on the Barrett's. Or on both conditions. If you have had acid indigestion or acid reflux into the throat, there is a chance you may have Barrett's, and it's not something to be ignored.
