disability timeline in Ohio

hi, I am new here, and was wondering if anyone who lives in Ohio has had a decision (favorable or not) made at some point after 90 days from filing. I filed in February for medical and psych. I was told by the 'caseworker' (I suppose thats his title) the 3rd week of May that the "medical" was all reviewed and that they were waiting on THEIR psychologist to review the other part. Mostly, psych problems were what I was filing on. The medical was a secondary issue. The caseworker told me that it should be finalized in 7-10 working days, which have come and went already. I don't know whether to keep aggravating them with phone calls or just sit back and wait. The waiting is driving me crazy though. I have chronic depression, OCD, DID-MPD, antisocial personality disorder, histrionic disorder, my lumbar vertebrae are all herniated. sciatica, neuro-pain disorder and some other back stuff I cannot spell or pronounce. The longer I have to wait inside this house, the more depressed and paranoid I become. I hate it. Any answer would be better than none.
Also, my mother SWEARS that the disability program has people that 'spy' on people who have applied for disability. Is this even for mental disabilities? I know for sure that a cousin of mine did that exact job for them, but it was for people who had applied for medical disabilities and the program was suspicious of exactly how extensive their limitations were.
Just new to all of this, depressed and yuckky.
Thank you .

Re: disability timeline in Ohio

Judypatootie,

EVERYTHING goes slowly during this process. I know that's little help while you're waiting for an answer on your claim. While you might have filed mainly due to psycological issues, a decision won't be made on your case until information is gathered on every problem you mentioned on your application. This is to your advantage. You might not qualify on any single issue but would qualify due to the limitations from all of your conditions combined. As you probably already know from reading the posts here, most claims are denied at initial application. You can always hope for the best, but prepare for denial. If a denial does come, have yourself a good cry, pick yourself back up and go on to the next step: file for reconsideration.

Social Security, as far as I know, does not routinely spy of people who have filed for or are receiving disability benefits. This practice, however, is common when it comes to private insurance companies and workman's comp cases. SS doesn't have the resources available for such things on a wide scale basis. Private insurance companies do. Sometimes the people who are caught scamming private companies/worker's comp on disability claims might also be applying for or receiving SS disability. In that case, I'm sure SS is notified of the situation and appropriate actions are taken. But as I mentioned, few if any of these investigations originate from SS.

As far as being investigated for mental vs. physical disabilities, it happens for both. It's just as easy to disprove a psycological disability by recording a person's activities as it is to disprove physical problems.

It sounds like you should be hearing something on your claim soon. Although your caseworker said the claim should be finalized in 7-10 working days, the decision must then be dictated/typed, etc. At this point calling probably won't do you any good (unless it just makes you feel better to do so.)

Let us know of the decision on your claim. --Kaylbe

Re: disability timeline in Ohio

Thank you so much for answering my questions. Having to deal with mental issues (which lead to my being fired from the hospital where I had worked for 28 years), plus the chronic pain, raising two teens by myself (my husband left me after I got fired..he "couldn't take the pressure" so he said.. HA!) sometimes I think everyone would be much better off without me. When you can't even provide for your family, its so degrading to me. Maybe things will work out.. I hope so.
Thanks again, Judy

Re: disability timeline in Ohio

I have to say I got a chuckle out of your post, not about your condition or disability but that your mom swears they spy on you. Well fact of the matter is they generally do not. Generally the companies that "spy" on you are private companies who have long outstanding claims or if someone calls them saying that someone is not disabled and even then they don't rush into doing it. It does happen sometimes, probably not as often as you think. Don't get upset or worry about it.

Ohio laws regarding disability are the same as all other states but I do live in OH. Generally you do hear something back around 90 days but not always, sometimes the system gets backed up and takes a little bit longer. It took me 11 months for my final approval, during that time I got two denials and the last one of those was overturned during an audit (I think they said 1 out of 5 cases get audited). Recently on a periodic review it took them well over 6 months to ever hear back, talk about a nightmare. The "caseworker" who handled mine really goofed up and is now hopefully fired.

Things will work out, one day at a time, sometimes one minute at a time. Trust me, no one is better of without you, I am sure your family needs you more than you know. While it might be hard to provide financially, you can give them something no one else can, a mother's love and understanding, and that is priceless.

If you don't hear something in a few more weeks I would give them a call and see the status of your claim. Just as Judy said, it does take a bit of time for them to get all the paperwork officially put together.

Re: disability timeline in Ohio

Hi Judy, I live in Ohio and I filed my application on Sept. 2003 for Rsd. As soon as my husband found out that i had a DDS officer( i think you call caseworker) He called our DDS office once a week with updates and the general health of me, my DDS officer sent me for a mental exam because he found out I had been not sleeping with my pain and have been depressed about not working, well that sent me in a tailspin so my husband again notified my DDs officer and he told him for me to go but after we got back call him and he would get the records right away, also my husband told him our finacial problems, all my unabilities to do small things around the house, as far as to go " she dont shave her legs as she used to everday" oh how embarresing, oh well it was the truth. lol. well anyways I just got approved for my ssd on april 29th but again my dds officer called and said I was pulled for quality assurance, so anyways I was officially approved on June 1. So hang in there but if you keep a nice relationship with your DDs officer it seems to help, and also keep all doctor appoitments you may have. I was approved first time and I am under 40. Also I went to the mental doctor clean but I didnt go all out with makeup or try to impress him, I went just the way I am around the house and in pain. Sorry this was so long but I thank God I was approved and I had a guradian angel for a DDs officer.
