The 5 step sequential process is how SSA analyzes claimant's cases and determines whether or not they are disabled. Enclosed is a simple overview of the 5 step process:
Step 1. Is the claimant performing Substantial Gainful Activity? If yes, stop, not disabled. If no, continue to step 2.
Step 2. Does the claimant have a 'severe' impairment? If no, stop, not disabled. If yes continue to step 3.
Step 3. Does the claimant's severe impairment meet or equal a Listing? If yes, stop, claimant is disabled. If no, proceed to step 4.
Step 4. can the claimant perform his past relevant work? If yes, stop, not disabled. If no, proceed to step 5.
Step 5. Can the claimant perform any other work? If yes, stop, not disabled. If no, claimant is disabled.
