Is my daughter eligible for benefits? - Disabilities Message Board

My daughter began losing her hearing at the age of 6 years old for unknown reasons. Today, she is 10 years old and has about an 80% hearing loss. She does wear hearing aids in both ears and she is in a DHH program in school. However, her speech is not too affected by the hearing loss, which I'm told is mainly because she developed speech before she lost her hearing. Is she eligible for SS benefits??? I am a nursing student and do not work, so we live off of my husbands salary, so I think we could be considered in the lower income category as well.

I just don't know how this all works seeing as how she has never paid into SS since she is only 10. Is disability a different thing? Sorry if I seem completely lost, but I really am.

Yes your daughter can receive ssi which is supplemental security income. My 4 yr old son gets it.

Thanks for the reply nsanders. How does the SSI work. How long are they eligible to receive it? Is it similar to disability? How do they decide how much a child is to receive?
