A few questions - Disabilities Message Board

First, a little history...I applied for SSI Feb02. Was denied. apealed and denied yet again. Apealed and saw ALJ. Decision made "fully favorable" for me. THEN....was denied by local office due to assets...Heres where the joy (NOT) comes in. My assets was a house that my X was living in and my name was still on it. I left due to DV issues. Anyhow, SSA told me I had to get my name off. So I did, and then was penalized for 7 months. I thought I would recieve benifits in Feb. I then found out, once you are penalized, it means you have to start ALL over. Anyway, I did in January 05. waiting for appointment to see their dr. My disabilities include, Seizures, Protein S Def., Severe Hearing loss, very poor vision (ambliopic in left eye, and 20/100 in right), Bipolar, PTSD, and Borderline Personality. Does anyone know the chanced of being approved after being approved before? Or will my chances be like the last and be denied over and over again??
I am exhausted, I feel inadequate, and trying to raise 2 kids on very little. I am sooooooo ready to give up.

Hi Laura! I am receiving SSDI and have been since July 2000. I don't remember being asked about monetary assets or property, etc. at all. And, if I had been asked and my answer was a determining factor, I'm sure I would have been disqualified. At the time I applied I was receiving private long term disability salary payments, fully paid medical and pharmacy insurance, owned a home with my husband, etc. I've been asked to fill out forms to update my medical condition twice since my case was approved (after first being denied x 2) but I've never been asked to answer any financial questions. Can you tell me more about this? Kathy Mac

If I could jump in here, I think I know. SSI is different from SSDI. A disabled person receives SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) if they have enough work points and if they don't then they receive SSI (Supplement Sercurity Income). SSI is based on need, if a person has money in a bank account and assets (such as cars, houses, boats, ect) then it is determined that they aren't in "need". Also some disabled people receive both SSDI and SSI if their SSDI benefits are low and SSI brings the benefit up to a certain monthly amount.
I would think that you should be able to be approved rather quickly since you have already been approved once.I think now they will just be wanting to see if your assets have changed enough for you to qualify financially. Do you have a lawyer? There are some very knowlegable people on this site, hopefully they will see your post soon. I am sorry you are going through this, I can see why you would be very frustrated. I applied a year ago and am still waiting. Hang in there.

I just received my disability it took me 2 years! I paid in enough quarters. Does this mean I can own a home and a car? also does medicare part A cost? I know that part B cost. I get ins from decessed husband. Does anyone know If i can keep that ins.?

If I may ask another Question!

My letter says I will be be reviewed in 3 years. will I have to go through all the testing they did on me before? Has anyone had this to happen ? I had a stroke. Plus other problems caused by the blood clot to my brain.
