I had to quit work last week because of SSD - Disabilities Message Board

Hi,
Any help or references would be appreciated.
I've been recieving SSD and SSI for 8 years for a major pysychiatric condition. I've worked part-time(as much as SSI allows-15-18 hrs a week)for the past 5 years.
Recently,my father died,and I've relapsed. My psychiatrist and counselor suggested asking for a 1-2 month leave of absence,both willing to write letters to my employer.
I called my boss last week,and explained the situation,and she said since I didn't qualify for the FMLA(not enough hours )she couldn't even give me a months' leave,even with notes from my Drs'.
I felt I had no choice but to quit. She said I could reapply in the future and they'd "consider" me. Of course I'd be at starting wage again.
They want a letter of resignation,and I have to collect my last check.
Since my phone conversation on May 4th,with my boss,I'm wondering about the legality of denying me leave because of my disability. We haven't got a union.
Can anyone help?

Dear Girl,

I know this was posted some time ago and there hasn't been anyone to respond. I'm sorry that I won't be able to share much good news with you regarding your situation. When it comes to employers, they can pretty much do whatever they want to do when it comes to granting or denying an employee leave. The reason for the leave makes no difference. This is why the FMLA was established. But it doesn't apply to part-time workers and has some other restrictions as well. You don't have any legal recourse in this matter...

I do hope that you are doing better. I recently lost my father as well. It's been difficult...
