Paid wheelchair? - Disabilities Message Board

Ive been in a chair for 15 years My first one was paid for by my parents insurance since i was still on their insurance when i got hurt. The second was paid for by the wholepersons to help me in school so i could get a job. After i got a job my last one was paid for by the insurance from my job. This chair is starting to hurt my back from the sag of the back rest and its starting to fall apart. Broken push ring, bent loose spokes its just very loose and not very sturdy anymore. The rear shocks are old and rotten front wheels are warn to the nub.

What can i do now? Im not working so i dont have any insurance or anything to pay for a new one and i cant afford a 2K chair. The roho seats alone are more then i can cover.

I dont drive a van so i have to have afairly light one to pull into my car just so i can get to walmart for my stuff.

i think if I were in your position I would start calling around to various gruops that work for the disabled,like the americans with disabilitys? there should be a chapter in your area.some of these places have donated equpment that are rehabbed and then reused by other folks in need,they may even take your old chair so they can rehab it for someone else.but this is the area I would start looking thru to see if there are programs in your area for the disabled.good luck,and i hope somone can help you out with this.Marcia

I agree with Marcia, call around to local support groups in your area. Try the Red Cross and similiar organizations as well. You didn't indicate why you are in a wheelchair but I know that some foundations do help people get wheelchairs if they have their specific disease like MS for example.

Go to scooterchair.com. They are very good at getting scooter chairs to people who need them. I applied for mine and had it within 10-14 days. It is very comfortable and it goes pretty fast.

You probably qualify for disability and Medicare ( age is not a factor if you meet other requirements) You would then be able to get a new wheelchair through these programs. I agree with other posters to contact local disabilities organizations who could help you get the paperwork started. I want to add that the rojo cushion would aso be covered.
