Social Security Disability???

My psychiatrist suggested I apply due to Acute Anxiety and Bipolar. I haven't worked for two years but had a steady employment history before then, with leaves of absence for Depression. I keep hearing that very few people get approved; does anyone here have any experience with SS Disability? Also, if I felt better and tried working, even if unsuccessfully, would that ruin the whole process? I don't want to do anything to harm my chances during the waiting period.

Re: Social Security Disability???

Strongly suggest that you visit the Social Security Disability website. There is a wealth of information on this site. The following is a quote from same:

"The definition of disability under Social Security is different than other programs. Social Security pays only for total disability. No benefits are payable for partial disability or for short-term disability.

Disability under Social Security is based on your inability to work. We consider you disabled under Social Security rules if you cannot do work that you did before and we decide that you cannot adjust to other work because of your medical condition(s). Your disability must also last or be expected to last for at least one year or to result in death."

Also, you may wish to consult w/an attorney that only deals with Social Security Disability cases to determine what your chances are. The initial consultation is *free*.

Good luck!
