I agree, that your best approach probably would be through your local SS office. If you remember the name of the person who did your interview, call him/her and see if they can help you or see you to discuss the problem. I had the name of my interviewer and called him several times about certain things that came up. I didn't get any back pay as I was approved on the first application, but it was the local guy I had talked to that gave me the good news, that I had been approved in five months.
Also, what about the attorney? Is there possibly any help there? Also, if you aren't on direct deposit, you really should be. Helps eliminate the problem of checks "getting lost" in the mail. My check is in my account each month, when it should be deposited.
