Is backpay always broken up? - Disabilities Message Board

I have not gotten the letter saying just how much I will get yet, however my lawyer figured it out in a very rough amount.
I keep seeing people post that there back pay was broken up in several payments. Is this ALWAYS the case?
My case is a closed period so no other payments will be sent.
I really need the whole thing.

If you will be collecting SSDI, then No.

If you are going to be collecting SSI then your backpay payments will be broken up in three payments, six months apart.

Hi Lynn,
Can you tell me how I would know that? I know it sounds crazy but I have no idea if it is ssi or ssdi.

Ok I figured it out, it is SSDI. Now I have another question (sorry).
I have 2 kids, will they get some sort of back pay also because this is a closed period and no ongoing benefits apply.

From what I can find it looks like your children may very well receive benefits along with yours. Check out this page at SSA.gov.

I would imagine you need to make sure that SSA has your children's info in order to calculate the right payment.
