When Does SSDI end and regular SS payments begin?

Have a question: I currently receive a monthly payment from the Social Security Administration for my disability status. I am 53 years old. Will I continue to receive the same amount of $$ when I turn age 65 or will I then be cut off from the disability status and receive less regular social security funds? Hope folks can understand what I'm asking! Thanks in advance - Memere (KathyMac)

Re: When Does SSDI end and regular SS payments begin?

I have read that when one goes on SSDI, one gets the same amount they would have received had they retired at retirement age. Basically social security is saying this was for you when you could not work anymore, that time just came earlier than expected. When we hit regular retirement age, the money amount doesn't change, but it's funded differently. We'll be converted from SSDI to regular retirement, but won't notice a change in amount. This is my understanding, and I sure hope it's accurate!

Roses - Thank you so much for that information. I thought perhaps that was the case but feel better now that somebody else besides myself is thinking along the same lines. Regards - KathyMac

Hello there -- add me to the list on this as well. I've read the same thing -- once you turn 65, you're changed to regular retirement status with no change in benefits. They explain it saying that because you've become disabled, you are just receiving the retirement early.

Akso, I have a question to add to this one...do you need to provide S.S reg. updates from your Dr. "once you are approved" for SSDI?
