Re: how much back pay can one receive if applied for ssi in 1998 to the year 2008
Backpay for SSI can go back to the day you applied for SSI. The date is on your application form is what is used. So, if you applied January, 2008, and were approved in October, 2008, you would receive backpay starting with January, 2008.
Did you apply in 1998, and still haven't been approved or denied??

Interesting post. I wondewr if this pers applird in 98 and was approved in 2008. Maybe they initially applied and then dropped the ball or went to work and reapplied, then they couldn't go back to 98 to collect. There are statutes of limitations. My neice keeps reapplying instead of apealing. Which I told her when you reapply you start the process over and they're not going to pay you for the first time you applied.

She really needs to change her system....SS will keep denying as it's what they do. Hardly anyone gets approved the first go around, even with good medical documentation. I'm wondering if this is what's happening to Gasstran88.

Do they kill you with taxes or is it exempt. Just curious. I'm waiting for a court date still. Was told maybe Sept. It took them a year to deny my appeal. My eff. date is 3/1/07. Just wondering if they kill you on taxes or will it be a nice lump sum. By then I should be in debt up to my neck.

You get one lump sum, but, it's up to you to file the taxes. The IRS has a form and directions for filing taxes on a lump sum back payment. It's pretty easy to follow.
So, the moral of the story is to not spend all the money as some of it will be needed to pay taxes.
