Congratulations! I know you must be elated!
Backpay depends on your dates. They can go back one year prior to your application date, then you have a 5 month waiting period. Example: if you applied for disability in July 2008 and claimed an onset date of July 2006, they would go back one year previous to start backpay. Since the onset date was more than 5 months before that, backpay would begin at July 2007. Second example: If you applied in July 2008 and claimed an onset date of July 2007, they would go back one year, but then you'd have a 5 month waiting period, so your backpay would begin with December 2007. Third example: if you applied in July 2008 and claimed an onset date of March 2008, there would be only backpay from August 2008 due to the 5 month waiting period.
Someone please correct me if I have that wrong, but I think I've understood it correctly.
