Has my ssdi back pay been voided by my ssi approval - Disabilities Message Board

I'm at best confused about the issue of back pay or retro active benifits. I was approved for ssd and told i was getting 23,000 in back pay but my regular monthly benifit was so low that i should also apply for ssi which i did and was approved for that too. On friday evening i was told by the 1-800 number that my back ssd money would be used to pay for my retro ssi money which gets paid over the course of the next year at six month intervals. My question(s) are: Did i lose the lump sum i was suposed to get for back ssd benifits because of ssi? if so how is this possible? If anyone can help me clarify it would be appreciated i'm really stressed.

i would call them back soon as possible and ask. then you would know the definate correct answer.

If you still don't understand what they are saying ,ask them to please explain directly. You do need to know what all amounts you will be receiving.

This is a large sum of money you are speaking of and you would definately need to know if you are still receiving this. i would definately ask them more questions.

Your local social security office would also have the answers for you.

jaymiek, have you been receiving SSI for a while? SSI is welfare, money given to poor people so they can pay for basics like food, shelter, and clothing. If you are due SSDI, the money from that will be used to "pay back" the SSI money. Depending on how much SSI was received, it may deplete the back pay. Otherwise, you would have received both a full SSI payment and a full SSDI payment for the past months. When it all works out, you will get the correct amount of money, as if you had been receiving the SSDI the entire time. If your SSDI is too low, you may be able to keep some of the SSI money to bring you up to a certain minimum level of benefits. Very confusing how they do this.
