Question on family benefits.....

I'm still waiting on the decision for my reconsideration....was told it should be the first of January to hear anything.

What I'm wondering is IF by Gods grace I am approved, How does SSD figure out if my spouse & daughter are eligible for additional benefits??

Thank you

Best of luck to you! Just as an fyi, only about 9% of the reconsideration cases are approved, so the next good shot would be the hearing stage, where it's over 70%.

If you are approved for disability benefits, all children under the age of 18 are also eligible. There is a "family benefit" amount that your family is eligible for, and this amount is split evenly among your children. If you only have one child, then this child would get it all. There is a formula for figuring out the family benefit....it's roughly half of what you receive. Their benefits are also paid retroactively, if you are eventually approved.

Best of luck with everything and please let me know if I can help further.

Regards,

Ex

Re: Question on family benefits.....

Dependent benefits are awarded based on your benefit. If you are approved then dependent benefits will automatically be approved as long as SS has the dependent information (name, DOB, SS#)

Members of your family that may qualify for benefits include:
-Your spouse, if he/she is 62 or older
-Your spouse at any age if he/she cares for your child younger than 16 (or older than 16 if disabled). This benefit ends when a non-disabled child if the spouse is under 62.
-Your unmarried child under 18, or under 19 if in high school full time
-Your unmarried child over 18 if the child has a disability that started before he/she became 22 (child’s disability also must meet the definition of disability for adults.)
-In some cases a divorced spouse may qualify if he/she was married to you for at least 10 years, is not currently married and is at least age 62.

I'm not sure about spouse amounts, but for children they get 50% of your benefit. So if SS pays you $1000/mo then your children would get $500/mo TOTAL. That means if 1 child or 6 children you get $500 total. (So $1500 total with your $1000 and child's $500).
