Concurrent Claim how does back pay work?

I applied for both ssdi and ssi denied at application ....and then hearing with an alj August 11, 2010)...today my decision is being mailed. I talked to someone who was so nice at ODAR, he couldn't tell me approval or denied, but he told me in a few days I would get good news in the mail...I won't be 100% sure till the letter is in my hand, but there were signs at my hearing that I was going to be approved. I had no attorney and represented myself.
My question is about back pay...do you recieve it from both programs , does it take alot longer?
Thanks in advance for answers...

Re: Concurrent Claim how does back pay work?

it depends. with ssdi you take your on set date add 5 months to that and that's the date your benefits are payable from-so if your on set date for EXAMPLE was approved by SS as 12/01/2009-there is a 5 month waiting period, so add 5 montns to 12 /01/2009 and you are owed $ beginning 6/01/2009 for the ssdi. with ssi, if approved and meet qualifications; you are paid from the date of your application

Re: Concurrent Claim how does back pay work?

Well I just found out I am approved for SSDI and the payment is high enough it excludes SSI...still waiting for the decision letter, but my local office gave me the decision....) No lawyer fees to figure so hopefully back pay will come quickly....Best wishes to everyone waiting...the anxiety is a killer

Re: Concurrent Claim how does back pay work?

Help Appreciated - Originally applied for SSI/D in 2004 while I was in Los Angeles. The claim was denied. I applied again in 2005. Their Doctor approved me, yet months later I was again denied. I moved to NY last spring and applied again in May 2010 - The girl who did my interview said it was good I was in Cali because they pay more. I received full approval in September.

First SSI check came Sept 1 for 761.00. Also got award letter saying they owed me over 40K, retroactive 4 years. Now December 3rd I'm on SSDI and monthly payment is up to 881.00

Meanwhile I don't have $ enough after bills to travel or eat. I've been borrowing from everyone I know and now I want to know if I can afford to pay them back after NYC takes back the 9K I owe and I owe LA 4 or 5 K?

Will the SSD back pay be larger than the 40K SSI pay? I need to choose between electricity or rent and am at the end of my rope. Thanks
