anyone been told their decision by SS before a letter?

The local SS told me my case has been approved but my attorney told me its not offical until I get a letter and that SS shouldnt tell me that. The attorney sounded skeptical but the SS lady seemed sure of everything she was telling me. So as u can see now I am really confused ! Has this happened to anyone else and was the SS office right?

Re: anyone been told their decision by SS before a letter?

I was approved last month. I got a phone call from my local SS office saying I was approved. The money was deposited in my bank account a few days later - then the letter came about a week after that.

Yes, I felt much better having that letter. It was proof I could actually hold in my hands.

Congrats on getting approved!

Re: anyone been told their decision by SS before a letter?

Thanks for the reply.
I called to check on the status at our local office ,I was shocked when she told me I was approved since I had been calling weekly and only heard things like no decision, decision made but with writers. She went through what will happen next and told me my worker will be calling me .Im going to call today and see if I can talk to the one who is assigned to my case and see if she says the same thing.I will post again when I know.

I am in the same situation, my local SS office got the decision because they get it electronically, I do believe I was approved. I called them . Also the nice person at odar couldn't tell me yes or no, but told me to expect good news very soon. Hopefully my letter from the judge will come tomorrow, it was mailed Thursday.
I do not know why your attorney would be skeptical, I didn't have an attorney.

Re: anyone been told their decision by SS before a letter?

DDSs (the state offices that review the medical information for initial and recon claims) generally do not releases decisions over the phone. If you have been denied, generally your case has been sent back to the local SS office by the time you call and the claims analysts generally don't want to get into a situation in which you are pressing them to discuss details of your case, or even hollaring at them. If you have been approved by DDS or ODAR, the decision still isn't final until you get the decision letter. The claim can be pulled by a DQB (SSA's quality assurance offices) and the decision on a case can change with their review. Also, the local SS office has to do a final nonmedical review of your entitlement to benefits. I think this includes things like making sure no new earnings have posted to your record, etc. After this is completed, then the award letter goes out.
Honestly, it's not even like an award letter means much. Ask someone who has had a decision overtuned due to a fraud investigation or someone in overpayment status.

Re: anyone been told their decision by SS before a letter?

Starry.. Mine went from ODAR to the local SS office, they told me my decision when I called them then they called me for a interview then called me again for payments. You do not have to wait for a award letter in all cases. My attorney still hasent recieved anything on me and I havent recieved anything either and payments are being sent out.
Its sucks about getting called back to review, this same thing happened to a family member and happened before payments started, its now been 4 months she still doesnt have a new decision on her case.

Re: anyone been told their decision by SS before a letter?

Hello no call yet from local office.
My husband had his ALJ hearing Mid December 2010 the ALJ agreed with the medical expert and said the SS doctors the CE and VRE had stated he was disabled. but the reconsideration person just picked out what they wanted to deny he was disabled in 2008 reconsideration person used a work comp report from 2005!!!!.
We also got a recent RFC exam from our physician who is a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist I'm sure that helped, vocational expert did not say a word. but at the end of the hearing the Judge thanked us for attending said my husband met the conditions and gave us a thumbs up. my hubby cried and excused himself until we get the letter I won't believe it.
The Filed just closed earlier this week assistant at ODAR stated we should get the Decision letter by next week and that we would be dealing with our Local office if we liked the decision? I do not have a # for our local office and the 1-800-772-1213 Rep stated oh I have your letter right here I'm looking at the decision you'll just have to wait for the letter UGH!!!!
my husband has a problem with communicating on the phone it's part of his disability and I' am not his Payee he can handle his funds, so basically do we visit the local office without a letter? we set up direct deposit with local office and I have an alert to tell us if their is a deposit, hubby is decompensating and will barley leave the house I do not know why some people get told the decision and we do not.

Re: anyone been told their decision by SS before a letter?

I just like for once be notified that I have been aproved and not denied.
I dont care if they send me a smoke signal to notify me or use the old pony riders to send me a letter saying I am aproved. I dont know if the pony and the rider would ever make it to me since I live in Hawaii but I dont care as long as I get some good news for a change!!!

I know I said this before but I honestly for what its worth feel you will get that approval it might be pony express but you will get it. You know I would write your congressman again and keep writting them over nad over to make sure it actually gets to them. God Bless you and all that have to go thru this horriable horriable process

Re: anyone been told their decision by SS before a letter?

I was told I was approved at my AJL hearing. My lawyer said that the judges like when they can do that since most of their job sucks.

Re: anyone been told their decision by SS before a letter?

We did not have time to find a Rep or attorney, I have a medical background so I represented him, the ALJ just let the medical expert speak about the mental aspect of the case, he did ask my husband a few questions pertaining to pain medication and I agreed with all the evidence that the medical expert quoted all that the reconsideration person failed to acknowledge or consider could of save us 6 months of anguish.
The recent RFC exam I'm sure help with the physical aspects the Judge did not need me to reply everything he needed for an approval was right their, he gave my husband the thumbs up sign and smiled the vocational expert did not say a word.(thats a very good thing)
After waiting 28 days after the hearing we tried to sign up for direct express but because nothing was in the system yet the application was rejected, I also called the main SS 800# and they said oh hey it let us enter it even though it says the case is pending. most of the postal carriers that deliver our mail go to the same doc as my hubby enough said,w I'm sure will get the text before the letter so waiting for that text saying a deposit has been made
