Hi, I have a question about backpay, approximatly how long does it take to recieve it? I won my SSDI in Nov. 2010 with a date of onset of May 2010. Thats when I had revision surgery for a failed fusion. The original surgery was in Sept. of 2008. My lawyer and I appealed the date of onset to be reset to Sept. 2008. We expected to get a date to go in front of an ALJ but I got a letter from them Friday....fully favorable!!! No ALJ hearing, no court....ect! So my date of onset is now officially Sept. 2008. The letter siad they had figured the amount for attorney fees (no actual figures). Anyway, just wondering how long to see the deposit since I have some bills that would be great to payoff! Oh, I do have direct deposit. I will be talking to my lawyer tomarrow but just wanted to throw this out there anyway. Thanks
Generally the larger the amount of back pay the longer it takes. Mine took about 2 months. Since my son receives payment from my benefits his back pay was half and we received his 1 day after I filed his claim. Really there is no way to predict how long it will take.

And it unfortunately varies widely with no particular reason. Two people in the same city with similar back pay amounts can have vastly different dates of payout of back-pay. See if your attorney can continue to work with you to get the back pay as soon as possible.
I just talked to my lawyer and he didint even get the letter yet, so he wants me to bring him my copy in the morning. He did say that he submitted a brief when the appeal was sent in so know he wants to be sure everything was addressed properly? Oh well, I will know more tom. I guess.
there is no way to know when you will get your back pay and your atty cant make them pay any quicker either, they may say(ssdi) you wont recieve your back pay for at least another 6-8 months and then suddenly the money shows up in your acct-such was the case with me. my onset date is 1/27/2007-i was awarded my ssdi 7/16/2010 and recieved backpay 12/2010 this was after ssdi told me and my atty that it may take up to a year!

That was what I was ready to write to you. My backpay showed up in the bank quickly. I did not have to deal with any attorney fees or any of that. Just keep checking your banck account, because it could show up from now to a few months.

I have a question I'd like to inject here. Once you are approved, I understand now that it may take several months for the back pay to show up. Do you receive any monthly payments right away or do you get the backpay 1st...then the following month, your normal monthly SSDI payments?
