My brother just came home form late shift, put a manila envelope on the kitchnen counter. It is from "them" 1" thick feeling it, it is most likely a decision. this is way to quick, oh it oculd be something else but it is most likely a decision. In any case i am not opening it.

Perhaps wait until morning to open it when we will all be here to support you in either event. It could be a decision, or it could be a request for more information. You will need to open it, and tomorrow morning would be a great time to do it as we will all be available to talk to you about it. Just remember it's going to be ok regardless of which way it goes.

I got my denial letter quickly, within two weeks. I would think the quicker the better also, but the judge was very quick to deny me. I'm sure she already had decided to deny me before my case was even heard. I did not get a fair hearing at all. I hope your brother got approved.

I remember them sending me a packet of additional forms to fill out after I applied. That could be what it is. If so, send it back asap so they can make their decision. If it's a decision...then we're all here to support you whichever way it goes.

I am here too. I want to support you no matter what the envelope says, or if it is just more forms to fill out. Would be it be easier on you if you called Social security? talked to one of them about it? To hear it is a little easier to see it on paper , in black and white?
Were here for you !

This is probably what it is as PME said. They also sent me the same thing. The packet simply contained additional forms for me to fill out and send back in.

Turns out i was panicking about nothing it is more forms. A function report (which i thought i'd never get) and another questionnaire....SS wants high school records of all things. 1981 here in KY i was a freshman.....don't know how they will get anything from the school since it was so long ago! It is also supposed to be returned within 10 days so i really appreciate your encouragement to open it because i was afraid it was the dreaded denial letter!! Thought it was too early for a decision but the thickness surprised me and ppl have been approved/denied at such an early stage. My brother is giving me major pressure to get a job now which really sucks because it just adds to the stress; but I will fill the thing out the best i can with the help of the firm who is helping me. Thank you again for your support, it means a lot

I'm glad you looked at it I woud like you said get the firm to help you. And as far as your brother is concerned try to stay on course with filing for ssa because you have already taken many steps in the process already please don't give up. It already tuff enought to find a job out there very competive and you seem to get presured easily so if I were you let this ssa stuff run its course you know your limiation better than anyone else you know what things you can handle and what things you have already proven you can't handle people on this board are very nice and caring some have already been thru the whole filing process so please I know everything about this process is hard but please stick with it . God Bless You. And may you be strong.

I am glad you opened it too. Wow all the way back to 1981? that is a long time. Perhaps the records will show that you needed special education services which will prove that your disability had began in childhood. That means you would be eligible for disabilty as a adult child , in which this would come off your parents social security record.

Don't give up. If you do and then decide you wish to pursue again, you have to start all over. Patience is the name of the game it seems. Why is your brother pressuring you to find a job when you are in no condition to work? Do you live with your brother?

Yes, I have been staying with him since I lost my job last year. I think he believes that most mental problems are a matter of willpower, that it is a matter of finding something you are interested in rather than it being a disability per se. He is very supportive in other ways, but I don't think he understands how mental illness can affect a person. He has been pressuring me a lot (so I signed up with Kentucky Voc Rehab), but I know I have to keep in mind my own health, as others have pointed out here. It is true, patience is key

Thank you jgrangran i'm going to really try. i think i underestimate my limitations sometimes and succumb to pressure but i will try to remember to stay the course...it is tough out there even for people without disabilities
I too have a family member that thinks I should just be able to think positive and talk myself out of my mental health issues. I know family mean well, but sometimes they just don't understand. It's an illness, not something we have control over. I am hoping that you get approved on the first try, and don't have to go through the whole stressful appeals process.

Tell your brother (as I've told my family)...holding out for SSDI/SSI is important. Working could jeapordize the ability to be approved for benefits so when you start the process you don't want to do anything that would trigger SS to look for a reason to deny you.
The school records thing is interesting. Make sure, if you ever changed your name for marriage or anything else, that SS asks for the records in the name at the time you were in school. When I was hiring people years ago we used a company to do background checks. Repeatedly they'd ask a school for transcripts with the person's married name even though our form specifically required the person to say "name at time of graduation" for each possibility (HS, college, etc).
