Does medicare pay for mental health?

mscat40>>>>You would probably know about this. My disability is due to a mental health impairment like yourself. How does medicare pay for costs incurred for seeing a mental health provider? Anyone who knows anything about this, please reply back. Thanks! Is there a yearly deductible?

it does pay for mental health but i'm not sure how much. i have private insurance so i didn't keep part b. i also found that many of the pdocs in my area don't accept it.

Re: Does medicare pay for mental health?

I think it depends on the State you live . If medicare is the only source of insurance then the best thing to do is call Medicare directly and see what they cover for mental health services. Even though I have 2 medical insurance's I use my medi cal for coverage all the time. Medi cal is for Ca residences, Medcaid for other states. So I strongly reccomend you to see if you could be covered by them first, then use medicare for the hospital stays and any bigger coverages. I do have a dedutable for medicare, it is just $169.00 a yr.
Ceertain things are not covered by med ical, such as eye glassess, I get a 20% coverage for glassess, and then their is the dental coverage.
It is best to call medicare and see what they cover, but be prepared for a deductable.
Some people have to pay a co pay every year for medicare. I don't probably because of the fixed income , and it is not high enough to worry about yearly medicare payments. I also have a separate plan for prescription coverage through medicare, but i usually use med ical for that too.
Just check and see what you are covered with medicare and your deductable. I think it is different from state to state.

Re: Does medicare pay for mental health?

Medicare Part B covers out-patient care at a rate of 55%(80% for other kinds of treatment). But no minimum on appointments. Make sure you get a supplement that covers part or all of the rest. Medicare never covers everything.

Jenny(I see my therapist every week....thank goodness for Medicare!)

Re: Does medicare pay for mental health?

Thanks Jenny. It says in 2014, medicare will pay 80% and you will pay 20% for outpatient mental health.

Re: Does medicare pay for mental health?

Thanks BlueSkies. Yes, they are phasing in the "parity bill" that was passed last year. All insurance companies, including Medicare, must treat mental health treatment just like any other kind of medical/surgical problem.

But it makes no difference for me as I have a supplemental plan that pays 100% of what is left over. I pay through the nose for it but since I get a med every 4 weeks that costs $2500., I get it back each and every month!

For once, I win in the insurance game!

hugs all..................Jenny

Re: Does medicare pay for mental health?

I am glad I was able to keep Medi cal , with the medicare. Because I don't have to worry about the medicare premiums every year, or co pays. It is wise to have a supplemental insrance plan that covers all mental health appointments and medications.

This is good to know, as psychiatrists (unless you are in a sliding scale program) are so expensive, plus therapy for maintenance, etc.
