Backpay and test deposit

Did SS do a test pay deposit to your bank account to make sure the account/routing #'s were valid before the actual deposit?

Re: Backpay and test deposit

In my case, they did not make a test deposit.

My local office called to get my bank routing numbers (and that is how I found out I had been approved ), and the money was deposited a few days later.

Re: Backpay and test deposit

There was a prenotification that a deposit would be made the day before it was deposited; not sure if this happens with all banks, but that is how i found out i was approved.

It was a note in the account saying a deposit would be coming in (I think the purpose is to validate the account information prior to posting.)

Re: Backpay and test deposit

Sometimes they do a quick "test". These don't show up on bank statements, for the most part, since the test is either $0 or something like $0.01. Or they can just attempt to deposit on the day you expect and if unable to then perhaps an automatic check is created and sent.

SS has tons of routing numbers in their system so they often know those are correct, it's the account number they can't find except through the recipient (you).

Re: Backpay and test deposit

just spoke to my bank and there was a test deposit done yesterday, aug 20 for $0 from ssa.. hoping my backpay hits this week ! ssa told me yesterday that my first month of benefits would arrive on oct 12.. that said, if they were not about to drop in my backpay, i think they would have waited longer to do the test deposit...

Re: Backpay and test deposit

I did not ever have a test deposit either. i do have a question though? If you are a representative payee can you have thaty person's social security money deposited into your account? Or do you need to open up a separate bank account for that person? For me it would be my son?

Re: Backpay and test deposit

no, you can not have their money deposited into your account. it has to be a dedicated account to be protected from garnishment and for proof that the funds belong to the recipient..
you have to go to the bank and set up an account that will have this information on the top of the checks:
name of rep payee (you)
rep payee for (name of ssi recipient, ex: your child)

i know this because i am ssi rep payee for my stepson..

Re: Backpay and test deposit

they do not always do a test deposit, as to why they do it, it is to validate the account. they may have done this because when i applied online for benefits i entered a different account number (which we used primarily for making bill payments), which at the time was the only account i had. since then i opened a second account at the same bank, which is used for non-bill purposes, and within a week of being approved, i contacted ssa and gave them the number for this account... i will be opening a "dedicated" account for my ssdi benefits only soon, as to protect the funds.. as soon as my backpay hits the bank, i am going down to see if i can go ahead and set up the dedicated account and give ssa the account number so they will send my first payment direct to that one, or if i have to wait until the first check actually comes in to set it up...

Re: Backpay and test deposit

Just so other readers are aware, there is no need for a dedicated SSDI account umless that's a personal preference. If awarded SSDI any benefits received will go straight into my regular checking account. SSDI doesn't monitor what we do with our SSDI benefits so no need to separate out into different accounts.

This is true unless you have some sort of financial judgement against you. In a dedicated account, SSDI funds cannot be garnished.
