Medical vs Non-Medical...what's the diff?

Hello to all....
Just got off the phone with the SSA (800#) rep and he told me that I was approved for the MEDICAL, but the NON-MEDICAL is waiting to be completed. Can anyone help me with this? Just last week, I turned in the requested income info (no income as of now) it was in Final Determination and now I get this info. I was told at that time it would be about a week or so for the case to be completed. He stated a letter was mailed on OCT 1, 2011, that I have not received. I have applied due to my Bipolar/Severe Depression/GAD/Psychosis in June 2011. I submitted all medical records from my psychiatrist as recent as May 2011 when I applied. I did not have to see a SSA doctor thus far, so I am REALLY CONFUSED!! Please help!

Thanks in advance!

Re: Medical vs Non-Medical...what's the diff?

Found an answer.....hope this helps someone else!

Medical Qualifications
To receive disability benefits, a person must have a mental or physical disability that is so severe, she is, and will be, unable to work for at least a year. Individuals who apply for disability must show that they are unable to work at their previous job and that their disability prevents them from taking on different work.

Non-Medical Qualifications
A person's age and Social Security earning history are non-medical qualifications for Social Security disability programs. For example, the SSA might determine that a person qualifies for disability based on his medical history, but will deny him SSDI benefits because he didn't work long enough earn those benefits.

Do you meet the Non-Medical Qualifications for SSDI? If not, you might still qualify for SSI.

Yes, I believe so. I have worked since 14 and approaching 40. I get a letter from SSA every year that states my earnings and whatnot.

Just gonna hurry up and wait!

Yeah, your definitely qualify for SSDI after reading what you just wrote. When did you submit the initial application?

I applied online June 6, 2011. I stated my disability date for February 2011. I don't know what date they will use, but I hope to hear something soon. I got a call from the local office last week to answer questions about assets, my bank acct info, who I live with, and to submit any income papers. The rep said it could be today, two weeks, or two months. I just hope soon!

Maybe you will qualify for both programs If your SSDI is low enough you could also have SSI. The questions that were asked by the S.S rep, are the ques. for the SSI program. That is why I think you could get both. Best wishes to you!
