I've just been informed that I will qualify for medicare a and b starting in December. I applied for the "extra help" from social security to help pay my premiums. Does any one else receive this help? How does the program work? I read the info on the social security website but it doesn't really tell me anything. Does social security pay my premiums directly or do I pay them and then wait to get reinbursed? If anyone has any info I would appreciate it.
I think it depends on the amount you receive in SSDI each month. i did not have to apply for extra help, it was automatic for me. The state pays for my premiums . I do not pay anything . I am not sure how much a person can have or does not have in order to qualify for extra help. My medicare started right away because my date of onset went further back 2 years.
Yeah, I am the same as Mscat. My EOD (Established Onset of Disability) given to me by SS when they approved my disability went back further than the 2 years and 5 months (disability waiting period), so I qualified for medicare right away when I was approved. I do not qualify for any extra help because my SSDI benefit amount is too high plus I am still getting an offset LTD benefit.
@dbsummersun13>>>have you gone to the medicare.gov site and registered? They have live 24/7 chat available. I have used it several times and they can answer any questions like this. You can also call them 24/7 (except on Holidays I think) but I prefer the chat. It I can resolve things via chat, then I will call. I don't think you can register until you have your medicare card in hand.
