being disabled and legalities

Hi,
I am new to this board. I just recently was approved for disability and have been without a stable place to live for a year and a half. I have been looking for apartments and have been having a lot of problems. Mainly because of how much I am getting it's not super low but def not a lot.

I have been so freakin stressed because my money is just slipping away and still no place to live.

Today I went and met w/a lady at an apartment and I had told her previously I was on SSDI. When she arrived she said "oh your on disability but you look fine". I said " I know, thanks". I knew after that she was trying to get me to spill. After viewing the apartment, I loved it and can afford it, but it will be tight. I filled out the application (no fee) and then she said "I want to ask you a personal question. What are you on disability for"? She said it in a way that was very much curious and nosy but also leary of me". However, in my desperation I said depression. I was so upset at myself because I did not know how to handle the situation. This is illegal what she just asked and I knew it.

My question: How can I inform this lady (who barely speaks english) that what she did was wrong. Honestly I am so angry at myself right now I should have taken the app and walked right out put she seemed clueless or else just playing that card to get the info. Ugghhh I dont know what to do. I wish I could just send her a letter explaining legalities but I dont know where I would send it. As she lives off site... maybe I should ask for address since that IS completely legal....

rant over.

Re: being disabled and legalities

I dont know the legalities but I do know I read something about discrimination based on a disability on the disability association website so you may want to google it and call them to see what you can do
