How dd I ever work for a whole year like this!

So this week per my doctors orders I started short-term disability. The plan is to get some rest and work on getting my health on track which will include physical therapy some more treatments and overall just trying to get control of this pain.
So yesterday I took a little walk and I was thinking how did I ever make it working like this? The last two days I have been in such pain. And I can't even talk about sleep I don't even know what that is at this point. So I really, really don't know how I made it thru the last year of working. The overall pain and lack of sleep is just so much that I don't know how I ever did it.
So even though I am scared and concerned about the future and providing for my family I feel that this is the best thing for me right now and I really need to concentrate on my health.
Right now I have eight weeks left of FMLA and plan on starting back on physical therapy and trying to get back to swimming and walking and in general just trying to work on my health. I also paint and I'm getting back to that, as I think that'll help me relax and give me something to do keep my mind off the pain.

Hope everyone else out there is having a better week and if I'm not on the boards anytime soon happy Mother's Day!

Hi. I'm new to this board, or new to posting anyway. You didn't say that you got hurt at work. Did you? You might can receive short term disability benefits, or if it's job related you could receive worker's comp benefits.

I really feel for you. I worked two more years after my injury, carpal and cubital tunnel, (severely pinched ulnar nerve) and then pain starting spreading into my neck area which the workers comp doctor never even listened to me about that. I had three EMG's, all confirming carpal tunnel and the pinched nerve, and a pinched nerve in my neck [caused by bulging disc]

By 2009, I was having more problems but the workers comp doctor said there's nothing else wrong with me. By that time, I'd had eight EMG's, all confirming pinched nerves at the elbow, neck, and carpal tunnel. SO I went to my own gp and he put me off work and said again that I should look into Social Security. I was only 38 at the time and thought he was crazy when he first mentioned it in 2007. He mentioned it again and I told him I was only 38! He then sent me to several specialists, a neurologist for my pinched nerves, and an orthopedic specialist for the pain in my back. Both said I'd never be able to work again. I was certainly crushed at the news and scared to death about how I was going to be able to provide for my family.

But I did get short term disability as the pinched nerve was work related, and then after that ran out, I discovered I could receive long term disability. I finally sucked it up and applied for SSDI. Took two years but I got it.

I don't know if this info will help you or not. But talk to your doctor, see what he says about going back to work. If he's a good doctor, he'll be honest with you and tell you whether can return or not.

Best of luck to you!!

I was just wondering if you had been to a pain clinic? My niece goes to one which is the only way she can function.

Good luck.

Re: How dd I ever work for a whole year like this!

Thanks Lorigibs,
My condition is not work related, it was found by accident when I was being treated for headaches and the MRI showed herniated disks and a condition called OPLL (Ossified Posterior Longitudinal Ligament) which is hardening of the ligaments around the spinal cord and they turn to bone. I had one pressing on my spinal cord that when they operated had almost made a hole in the dura.
Right now I am in the process of being approved for Temporary Disability Insurance (which is something we have in my state), they have sent me all the paperwork and once the doctor fills out the forms I will be all set. Then if needed I may need to go on LTD provided by my work and maybe SSDI.
We are taking it one step at a time and the doctors have given me their full support.
Right now I am trying to get some rest, and get back into PT to see if that will help.
Thanks again...

Yes, I was referred early on by the neurosurgeon who operated on me. They are very good and have an array of doctors and medical practitioners who work with the patients trying multiple procedures to help with pain management.
