Anyone ever get vertigo,dizziness...

I have many allergies - indoor and out. for the last few days I've had vertigo with some dizziness along with congestion and a feeling of fullness in my ears. Got so bad I went to the ER last night. head ct and ekg and chest x-ray were all clear - was on a monitor for a while and heart looked fine. left with a diagnosis of sinusitius and rx for antibiotic, antivert and told to stay on regular allergy meds. Just wondering if anyone has every dealt with this before. ER left me feeling a bit unsatisified since they could not say for sure why I had the vertigo.

Re: Anyone ever get vertigo,dizziness...

Yes, most of us here know about vertigo and dizziness related to allergies. No one at the ER will be able to help you or understand why your dizzy. I suggest you see an ENT who specializes in sinusitis.

My thinking is that dizziness is the sinus's is either by blocked passages, inflamation, or a deviated septum. Sometimes deviated septums are not seen on a CTscan and maybe it needs to be looked at clearer and the only person that can do that is an ENT. I just got mine fixed and I'm way less dizzy and feel like I might be dizzy free when I am completely well!

However, there are some temporary fixes to dizziness in the sinus's like a steroid. Taking them along w/antibiotics should help. But, if dizziness returns again at another time then you need to get it looked at to see what is causing it to get it fixed. Sinus dizziness can be cured if the right ENT knows what is wrong and can fix it!

Re: Anyone ever get vertigo,dizziness...

I think I know what you are experiencing. I've seen every doctor in the book since 4 years. My dizziness went away about a year ago when my doctor gave me flonase, but 3 weeks ago it started again. I am very discouraged ... In a few weeks I will be seeing an allergy specialist maybe he can help me. Because 4 years ago I saw 3 ENT, Sinus X-Ray, Sinus Scan and Head, Neurologist, many blood tests, gastro specialist, thyroid gland specialist, cardiologist etc... nothing ever came out except a sinus inflammation. If the allergy specialist does not work out I will maybe try to see a 4th ENT spcecialist. What is bizarre with these symptoms is that after I eat the sinus pressure, dizziness, extreme fatigue is always worse after I eat.

I hope you find what is causing your symptoms

Do you mean a spinning feeling with vertigo? I have been lightheaded for 7 years with my allergies. No spining just lightheaded. It is important for you to be exact with your symptoms. Yes, the innear ear can be affected by allergies and yes this can cause spinning, dizziness and lightheadedness.

Re: Anyone ever get vertigo,dizziness...

Thanks for all the feedback! My symptoms seem to be a sense of movement when I am not moving, like I am tilting over to one side although I am not. I call that vertigo, maybe it is dizziness - not too sure. When I close my eyes I definetly have a spinning sensation. Also, I am getting a sort of fluttering sensation in one ear and sometimes it seems like the volume just goes down in one ear or that it "fills up" - very frustrating.

I have seen my doc and she believes that it is pressure on my ears from my sinuses, probably set off by the allergies. I live in west central Florida and due to the hurricanes, we have a lot of standing water and one of my major allergens is mold. Anyway, I am on antibiotics, allergy meds and flonase - I have a rx for antivert but it makes me so sleepy that I can only take it at night when I don't need it. I am hoping that this goes away soon, it is making things a bit difficult and making me fearful - like maybe there is something else (read "worse") wrong with me.

Have you had soy recently? I remember getting vertigo and dizziness very badly, and it took me a couple months to realize that I was allergic to all the soymilk I was drinking. It can cause a whole slew of things, including hypotension.

You may have some other inner ear disorder such as Meiners disease. If you are a young person this is a possibility. If you have had it for a very short time, it may only be a side affect of an infection. Do some research on inner ear disorders and see if anything sounds familar.

Re: Anyone ever get vertigo,dizziness...

Actually I do believe that dizziness is caused by pressure pushing up into your Eustachian tube. Usually this happens when your sinus's are not functioning properly. This happens when there is some type of structural problem in your nose/sinus. I had a deviated septum and my sinus' were not draining normal at all. It would either go down my throat or push on my left ear which caused the dizziness. It got worse through the years. I just had surgery last week and I can tell there is a huge difference already! Some deviated septum's are hard to see on a CTScan so go to a good ENT and talk to him about this and hopefully you can see if this is the problem.

Re: Anyone ever get vertigo,dizziness...

Hi I wanted to post mesage here about Vertigo.. I have allergies such as mold, dust, trees, grass, pollen, ragweed, cat ( although dr wasnt so convinced by this) and tobbacco. Iused to smoke and used to be sick when I was smoking. anyway I get allergy shots every 2 weeks been doing it for like almost 4 years now. I have went to the dr so many times this year! Its becoming so frustrated. I ve had sinus ct scan, Been on many different kinds of antibotics this year. I m currently taking Protonix for my gerd problem. I really wonder if its gerd or if its really from my sinus problem that haveaffected to my lungs. Clarinex as needed. Humibid la (decongestion) Advair for mild asthma. I went to see ENT about 3 or 4 weeks ago. They said that I do have sinus problem and decided not to put me on antibotic ater I ve told them how many times I ve been on it all year and different kinds of ntibotics. so the Dr decided to put me on Humibid decongestion meds. and gave me "sinus rinse" I do like it, I dd feel that it did help. But then a week later I got very sick with Strep throat. Ever since that happened on Oct 18th. I ve been still sick since then. I woke up with feeling everything was off balance, fever and severe sore throat. So I decided to go to see the dr. ( it has gotten to a point where i m feeling like worried what they would say if I went to see them "once again") and let me tell u something, that is very stressful to be thinking that. Its no fun! anyway Iwet to see him and he said that I had Strep throat and ear infection. So I was sick basicaly the whole week. I was on antibotic once again. Had to cuz of my strep throat. So I took it and then my whole family got sick from me. But during that time I started to get dizzyness which I just discovered it might have been vertigo. But it was very mild. I would get spinning in a very slow way but i would hve to stand still and hold my hands onto my forehead and say ' come one go away!!" u know that feeling? and then when that s gone i feel kinda tired. I caled dr s office and nurse answered and said yeah that has to be from ear infection. So I accepted it but then by end of week bac of my head was hurting. and I had Facial pain on my left side by where my eye was. So I calle dmy ENT she said to keep taking the sinus rinse. So I did it gotten better but my er was still hurting a bit and felt little discharge coming out clear fluid. So I had to go see dr again in case i had to get ear drops. I didnt want to miss any more work. I m self employeed so I have to work to make money!
I went to see the dr and he said my ear canel was red and could see little fluid in ear drum. I did ask him about dizzy he just downplayed it. and precribed me antibotic ear drops. and said he didnt want to give me any more antibotics. I agreed. But since that I took it on thursday night the ear drops. then on friday I felt my head spinning as i was about to go to work. So I had to get going then on way to work i had another epidsode of head spinning while driving. But it wasnt so bad. But I could feel it took ome of my energy. But like i said it wasnt so bad. Then yesterday It was my son s birthday party. I was feeling lightheaded alost all day but then again its usually like that. Then all of sudden when he was in middle of the pinata hitting moment i had a real bad one everything was spinning real fast! It felt like slot machine. spinning fast then it starts to slow down. I didnt want anyone to know what was happening so lucky for me i was right by a wall. So i went to lean on the wall and waiting it out. it went on for about maybe 30 to 40 seconds. But after that i felt sick to my stomach! felt like i had to throw up. I was already feeling just a bit neausea before that hapened. but had no time to pay attention to it. anyway after that happened. I couldnt move my head without feeling the room was wobbling around. not spinning but if i were to move walk around move my head left to right up and down i would feel so sick. so i had to go uptairs and lie down and realize that i had to sleep it off and i ended up sleeping for 4 hrs. when I woke up i did feel beter but I felt like my whole energy was sucked out of me and I felt like a sick feeling. My head felt little groggy after that. That feeling when that happened, put a fear in me. Because I m afraid this will happen again when I m out there driving or wherever. I m tryign to decide if this is my chronic sinitus problem? or is it allergy related, or could it be from the ear infection? or is it something serious? My neck does hurt but then again I have been thru alot this whole past week with doing house project putting up the ceiling. With my head tilted up looking up the ceiling putting up the drywallceiling up. But I havent done anythign since wed. I m also wondering if the ear drops cold have contributed to this. Cuz lke i indicated that I started the ear drops on thursday night and then friday I felt head spinnign twice and once bad one on sat. So could the ear drops have caused that?

I apologize for this VERY VERY long post. But it has gotten to a point where i m frustrated. My family looks at me as if like i m overanayzing this. Trust me I would not be wanting this to happen. I got 2 small kids 5 and 2 i m 31 yrs old, I sure do miss the old days of being carefree and being able to do things! We were supposed to go to haunted house last night but With my dizy spell/ vertigo it screwed up everything.

I did hve this problem few years ago but dr wasnt able to figure out why so it went away but when that happened I remember that feeling. it was very frightful feeling. My wife had to go with me to my job, I work as interpreter. She went with me because i was worried the vertigo episode would hapen again. But then after time went by I got used to it and then knew it wasnt going to happen again. But now this has happened several times in past 2 weks and a real big one yesterday. What would you do?
any suggestion? My wife is bsically like tired of hearng me complain, or whatever. So i basicaly have to just keep it to myself if i can..but again its not a really good feeling to go thru especially with all of this constant new thing happening over and over.

Well guys and gals. thanks for your time to hear me out!
I hope for those of you who do suffer the same thing what I go thru with this vertigo will pass this by soon. I know how it feels and its the worst feeling when u cant be in control of urself at that moment!

Thanks again

Re: Anyone ever get vertigo,dizziness...

one last thing to add here. I m not sure if this would be another reason to it. When we had the party it was over at my mother s place. The house is little fallign apart and I had to take shower there as we didnt have time to get ready at our place so we went there and then got changed over there. Anyway in her bathroom the ceiling had a leak so one part of ceiling is removed and she has tyvek papercovering that area. and u can get the feeling there s mold around there. So I m wondering if i were to take a real hot shower and then offsetting the mold in the air and then inhaling it would that cause it? CUz I have a feeling even tho i am allergic to mold i think I have a big reaction to it. Like for example when it snows. u know u bring alot in the car with the snow on ur shoes etc and it gets damp in the car i notice i get lightheaded and sick when that happens so i usualy feel its the mold. But anyway let me know if u think that s a possibilty.

when I mentioned that I used to have bad case few years ago, I used to live in an apt where there was a Mulch center that was about 1 block away. Whenever they brought in a fresh batch for those landscper to pick up.. if i were to smell that i would get sick and then it could sometimes cause my vertigo. so I m wondering if i happen to have a severe reaction to mold?

Re: Anyone ever get vertigo,dizziness...

Thank you Halls,

I was wondering even if a saw 2 ENT and I got a Sinus scan, X-Rays they told me they could see anything than an inflammation in the sinus and gave some Flonase it worked for a while but now the dizziness, sinus pressure is back. Do you think I should see another ENT and bring my sinus scan or should I start from new with a new ENT.

Let me know what you think,

Thanks for your help,

Re: Anyone ever get vertigo,dizziness...

I do! I have never experience the dizziness until A: I got on birth control (so that might have something to do w/ it) and B: my ear drum ruptured from a bad sinus infection...so it could be a number of different things...

Re: Anyone ever get vertigo,dizziness...

I haven't seen any of you mention FOOD SENSITIVITY. I had horrible ear problems, constant ear infections & vertigo for about a year or so. I went to doctors & an allergist. All they did was give me antiobiotics and cortisone. The cortisone made me feel better, but it's dangerous to take long-term. The antibiotics didn't work for more than a few days at a time.

What a waste of money, time & energy. Not to mention worry and fear. I thought I was dying. All this time, I was ALLERGIC TO MILK. I went off of it, and my problems went away. I also found that taking a lot of vitamin C helped. I'm also sensitive to soy milk (a lot of people are), and fruit juice, especially orange juice. By the way, I'm not lactose-intolerant - the milk affects my sinuses, not my digestion. This is very common, and not addressed often enough. Also, it's probably because of the pasteurization process & additives to commercial milk that make it so allergenic. Try to get raw milk anywhere -it's impossible. I take calcium pills now, avoid milk and ice cream like the plague, and I feel fine.

Please, everyone - I hate to see you taking all these drugs and feeling fearful all the time - try to eliminate dairy, soy milk and fruit juice if you haven't already. And never, ever drink soda pop. OK, maybe once a year. BTW, if you're allergic to a lot of things, it does help to eliminate whatever you can, because it will help lessen the other allergies. You can't help what kind of air you breathe, but if you're allergic to a food as well, getting rid of that food will help your body heal. Allergies are an illness, after all. You need to keep your immune system healthy to fight them. GOOD LUCK, ALL.
