Vertigo/Dizziness from TMJ?

Maybe someone can offer me some feedback or personal experience on this. For the last 6 months, I've been having some major issues with my right ear. It feels blocked most of the day and crackles a lot. I've also been experiencing a lot of vertigo as well, which I thought was due to sinus issues/ear issues. I've been going to an ENT for the sinus issues and they have been clearing up. He's a little perplexed on the ear right now so he put me on water pills in case there was fluid in there. So far, it hasn't helped my ears. The comment he made that led me to post on this board was when he told me the reason a certain area of my ear was sore was due to TMJ. Never having thought that could have caused the myriad problems I've been having over the past months.

My question is, have any of you been having symptoms with vertigo/dizziness? -If so, do you find that you have this feeling when you move your head around a lot? If I move my head quickly or look up (especially then), I get an off balance feeling immediately. Months ago, I was really clenching my jaw a lot and I was having some major headache problems up the side of my head as well. I posted in the inner ear disorder forum but no one ever responded to me so I am hoping someone might be able to shed some light on this for me. I have to go back to the ENT in a few weeks and more than likely, I will see the audiologist for a hearing test and next steps.

If the tests turn up OK, should my next trip be to a dentist/TMJ dentist. Will treatment stop the vertigo problems that I'm having? I would say that I had very minor symptoms for a few years but they have been abundantly obvious since July/August. I've also been under some stress/worry due to an impending divorce with my ex-wife.

Sorry for the rambling but I have a million things going through my head. Not that I would be relieved if this is all TMJ related, but I've been having so many sinister thoughts as far as what these issues could be, it's driving me insane.

BTW-

Amongst the other symptoms, I have been experiencing or experienced these on and off:

-Sinus type headaches (above/below eye/forehead/top of head) Not excruciating though
-Severe neck discomfort/pain at base/back of head
-Strange feeling in throat/somewhat like a tightness
-Lack of mobility if I try to move my lower jaw to "my right" (toward ear giving me problems-no issues the opposite way)
-bite seems way off
-right cheekbone feels "funny", resembling numbness but not really numb
-had major lower back issues over the summer

Thank you in advance for any responses.

Re: Vertigo/Dizziness from TMJ?

I'm totally dizzy. Ive been to doctors, had full physicals, been examined by an ENT and meurologist. The only thing wrong with me is TMJD. I'm always offbalance and I have this spacey/lightheadedness too on top of it =( I'm currently awaiting treatment so I cant really answer your question of if treatment stops it. All of your symptoms definitely sound tmj related.

Re: Vertigo/Dizziness from TMJ?

Sorry to hear about the issues you've been having. Yesterday and today wasn't so bad for me as far as the balance and vertigo. I still don't feel right but my ear somehow became "unblocked". I was doing some exercises with my jaw for quite a while yesterday and my ear kept crackling big time. I have no clue if it's related to the "exercises" I was doing. Bascially, I was just moving my jaw back and forth, kind of like a stretching exercise (if I could compare it to something). I'm going to start taking care of myself again by working out, running, and stretching a lot more to see if that alleviates some of the neck/back problems. I always get a little hopeful when I have a better day in terms of how I feel but then I get nervous that the next day will be worse. That's not the greatest attitude but unfortunately, that's where I am right now. Good luck with your treatments. I hope you start to see some progress very soon.

Re: Vertigo/Dizziness from TMJ?

Offbalance29

Two years ago I fell on my icy driveway landed on my left ear. For two years now I have been living with balance problems dizziness, vertigo, worsened by head movements, and head pain, numbness and stiffness in my face and head muscles. The neck was sore and stiff especially at the base of the back of my head, an unbearable pressure there on top of the back of my neck/head juncture, but the neck stiffness has become unbearable over the past several months. I now have stiffness in the muscles of my shoulder blades and even pain in my arms, and legs occasionally. A horrible feeling of something stuck on my throat that can drive me insane. anyway. After two years of seeing ear specialists, (of course because of all the tinnitus, stuffiness and blocked ears and dizziness, and bad ear aches) and being told there was nothing wrong wit me. I saw countless neurologists, all kind of doctors really and was told it has to be psychological since they couldn't find anything wrong with me. Well, to make a long story short. ONe day I realize my jaw had been poppoinng and clicking when opening, and some days I couldn't open all the way. I also realized that it was strange to find my bite, that it had changed. I had never realized these things because of the more horrible stuff with the dizziness and balance and stiffness and numbness and head pain. Well, i called my dentist and told him the whole story, he sent me to a maxillofacial surgeon who diagnozed with bilateral tmj and told me that my dizziness willl go down last in the treatment. I am wearing now for two weeks appliances on the lower teeth day and night, and will begin tmj physical therapy next week.
I am sharing this story because I know from experience how important it is to find out that there are others going through similar things, and it reassures us that our problems is what it is. When I started to read this forum I realized I really do have tmj, because of what others are experiencing, and it made me have hope that with the right treatment maybe there will be an end to these symptons one day.
good luck to you

Re: Vertigo/Dizziness from TMJ?

I have suffered many of your symptoms myself. In addition to TMJ I also have a ruptured disc in the middle of my neck and therefore this often causes my dizziness but I have found increasingly that I am suffering vertigo. Hope you get sorted as it does drive you mad!

Good Luck

Re: Vertigo/Dizziness from TMJ?

I to suffer from tmj, and have frequent spells of dizziness and lbeing light headed, my gp has put this down to low blood pressure caused by the medication that i take, i.e Morphine. He has also advised me to take things easy when feeling like this stand up slowley and stand for a minute to allow blood pressure to rise up as well. Things like looking up and bending down he has no advice for this and i have not found a way to deal with this yet.

Re: Vertigo/Dizziness from TMJ?

Thanks everyone for the responses. I appreciate it.

I've been doing a bit better since my original post. Actually, today has been the worst I've felt in a while. My ear feels a bit funny off and on and I have a strange feeling running up the side of my head close to my ear. Of course, with these symptoms the balance has been off today and my confidence goes right down the toilet. I've been having some really good days of late so I thought that maybe some of the issues were subsiding. Even the neck felt better the past week or so but today everything is coming back. I'm just trying to tough it out right now.

Thanks again to everyone that responded and I hope that all of you start to show progress and feel better as well. I'll keep reading from time to time and try to help and support everyone here.

J

Re: Vertigo/Dizziness from TMJ?

I've had pain and dizziness relief from Acupuncture. Unfortunately, my insurance doesn't cover it, but I'm going anyway. It's just a thought for you and anyone else in pain and feeling dizzy. She put needles in my jaws and also my ears and I felt better immediately. Hope you find some relief soon.

Re: Vertigo/Dizziness from TMJ?

I too have severe dizziness...as well as chronic neck pain, jaw pain...it hurts when I press behind my ears/temples and along my jaw line. The dizziness is better if lay down, but once I start walking my head goes into a fog, my ears start to fill up like I'm 40,000 feet and my neck, head, jaw start to ache immediately. Recnetly my shoulders and upper back have been extremely painful as well. It started in April of last year and I've been to see literally a dozen different specialists (ENT's, Neurologists, Cardiologist, Neuro-opthamologist, Oral Surgeon, Orthopedic Surgeons, etc. etc.). No one has been able to give me a definitive diagnosis. The MRI of my jaw, head sinuses, etc. was normal. I do have a herniated disc in my neck...but I've been told that this does not cause the level of dizziness I'm experiencing. The pain and dizziness is debilitating and getting worse everyday. Does anyone have any suggestions on a specific type of doctor. I went to see a TMJ doctor in NJ - Dr. Klemons - who wasn't sure if it was TMJ or not. He prescribed therapy at $6K...which I felt uncomfortable with given the uncertain daignosis. Any suggestions?

Does anyone else have dizziness when they start walking (vs. just sitting)...it's like I'm intoxicated, wobbly...and ears that feel full as soon as I've walked 30 yards or more...

Thank you

Yes! This is exactly what my problem is. I am fine laying down, sitting down as long as I don't move my head to the right. I notice that the pressure in my ears starts as soon as I start walking and it gets worse when I'm in a grocery store, mall, or large store like Home Depot. When I go outside, I'm basically fine. I can run, exercise, and move around and the dizziness/vertigo/balance/whatever it is, doesn't really affect me. I'm going back to my ENT in another week and then to the dentist in 3 weeks. I don't even know for sure if this is TMJ or not but my symptoms seem to match up with most everyone's here aside from popping or clicking of my jaw when opening. I have side to side grinding/clicking.

I noticed that my issue is strictly my right side (ear, eyes, head). If I tilt my head to the right, I get wobbly. If I turn my head to the right, the same thing. I also have a sort of stiffness/stretched out feeling by my temple and around my right ear. I'm getting so frustrated and just can't wait to go through all of the necessary tests in hopes of figuring out what this is. I also have a lot of tightness and stiffness in neck area and shoulders.

Back to the dizziness. I'm perfectly fine when I wake up in the morning. I take a shower and I'm fine. As soon as I start getting ready for work, I notice the ear gets clogged/stuffy and my balance starts to get worse. I'm very confused.

Re: Vertigo/Dizziness from TMJ?

Hello,
Your bite is definitely the culprit. My bite is uneven and it seems your bite is as well. The ear problem you have, and almost everyone else's, is due to the joint being too far back and up. Look through some books at the health section of your local public library and you will see. The neck stiffness, which i also have, and other problems you have are most likely due to muscle spasms. So what caused your muscles to spasm? Your joints are out of place and they are to blame. But why are they out of place? Your BITE. Your teeth keeps the joints in place. Without this support from your teeth, your bite will be off and the muscles will take over. This is where the spasms occur. So how do you fix this? Dr. Harold Gelb of NYC developed the "Gelb 4/7" theory. This is where joints feel the best without restrictions (locked jaws) and free of muscle spasms. Once you are near the "Gelb 4/7" vicinity, your problems will go away. FJO treatment (splint and most likely braces) is based upon this theory. I believe neuromuscular treatment has this theory in mind as well. Look at "The Golden Shimbashi" of dr. henry shimbashi.

If i were you, i'd go and take a tomogram of the joints. Check to see if they're near the "Gelb 4/7" and have it looked at by a doctor. I can tell you right now that atleast one side is off. Hopefully, you will have luck and find a honest, caring doctor. That i think is the hardest part. Hope this info helps

take care,
GT

Wow sounds just like me... and i often feel like im going to pass out...

Thank you very much GoodThings, that info definitely helps my peace of mind that it will eventually get better, I'm going (only a couple weeks left to wait now!!) to a TMJ/Orofacial pain clinic, who will do the tests on my bite and hopefully correct it for me.

Unhappy Re: Vertigo/Dizziness from TMJ?

GoodThings - Thank you...that is very helpful. I had an MRI done and my oral surgeon told me that my temporal joints were "perfect." Is it possible that I still may have TMJ?

I had a nasty fall about 1 year ago. I hit my face hard (stiches, etc) and had a large welt on my lower jaw bone for a few weeks. My neck also hurt...but all my X-rays were normal. I did notice, however, that my lower jaw had shifted to the right and that my teeth no longer meet where they used to. When I close my mouth only my right rear teeth meet...So I know that something has changed.

I was symptom free for about 4-5 months, then suddenly the neck pain, full ears, dizziness started. If this were TMJ, wouldn't my MRI have shown something abnormal? And would it have taken 4-5 months for the symptoms to show up? I'm very confused....

Re: Vertigo/Dizziness from TMJ?

MLZ - what type of doctor are you goign to see? I liked GoodThings suggestion, but what type of doctor does the test? I'm a little wary of some fo the TMJ dentists. I visited one in central NJ and found the appointment to be very theatrical/staged...and they wanted $6K for physical therapy. I'm concerned about being taken...so still searching for a realiable opinion. How do you go finding a reputable doctor?

Hope your dizziness improves. My symptoms get so bad somethimes that I can't even walk down the hall without feeling like I'm going to stumble...like I'm floating....

Good luck to you!
