Unhappy Virus or Vertigo?

Four days ago I turned my head during the night & felt my head spinning like someone had spun me round'n'around. It freaked me out! I felt very nauseous. My eyes were very heavy. I have had a virus with similar symptoms in 2003 which lasted 48 hours, but 4 days on and I still have a feeling of unstableness, the nausea isn't so bad but the strange heavy head, spinning sensation is still there.

When I lie down it takes a while (1/2 minutes) for the head to stop spinning. Lying on my back is worse than my left side, lying on my right side feels more comfortable. It came on suddenly & I haven't been able to function normally for 4 days.

I have had neck & back problems so, at first I thought it was related but now I'm not so sure.

Now, my symptoms are a strange light headedness, bending down then standing up my head spins, lying on my back head spins, sore base of skull, heavy eyes in the morning.

Any helpful comments or suggestions are appreciated.

B

Re: Virus or Vertigo?

Hi, I am no expert, but it sounds like BPPV to me. You can google it or look here for more information, but if it is that you would need what is called an epley maneuver.

It could be other things as well, so you should get checked out by Dr. as soon as possible.

Re: Virus or Vertigo?

Hi--I would suggest seeing a neurotologist as soon as possible--that way the doc can see your symptoms at the onset & examine you during that crucial period. They do tests that can help them determine if you have vestibular neuritis, BPPV, or migraine, or something else.

Good luck!

Re: Virus or Vertigo?

Hi,

Check out the article on the MEP in the top archived post. You can self-treat yourself with this at home. Sounds like you have a clear case of BPPV. It's easily fixed but there may be lingering symptoms afterwards.

Best ... Scott

Re: Virus or Vertigo?

I have since been seen for the third time by a different doctor who suggested I have BVVP or "acute viral labrynthitis". I have been prescribed some anti nausea medication & have been told it will be another week before the spinning head feeling subsides.

Thank you for your replies
