Unhappy Vertigo & Chest Pains....Thyroid? Anxiety? Diabetes? TMJ? Or WHAT????

HELP!!!!!!
History: Several years ago I had extremly bad symptoms of hot feelings, extreme fatigue, periods stopped for 2 years, loss of sexual feeling, etc......was FINALLY (after 4 docs)diagnosed with an enlarged thyroid (TSH and other tests normal, but the doc felt my throat & said Wow), and prescribed Synthroid to try to shrink it. At first i felt better than I had in YEARS. My sex feeling came back almost instantly, my periods returned like clockwork in about 3 months time, I felt better than ever, renewed energy, etc.
I thought my problems were over, until I went through a sudden stressful time 4 years ago (very sudden unexpected divorce after 23 year marriage, and nearly lost my house to foreclosure) at which time I was having severe panic attacks (chest palps, feelings of a heart attack, etc). Three times in ER in 4 years, tests all showed normal, etc. I quit taking the Synthroid then, because I was afraid (stupid maybe, but I was going through such a tramatic time, and was also drinking alcohol alot just to cope). I also have extreme weight gain, especially in my preggo looking belly. Went to several different specialists trying to find a solution to the dizziness, tests all normal. My doctor felt it was anxiety, and prescribed Adovan as needed (I am deathly afraid to take it, because i am afraid it will make me dizzy.......(GO FIGURE??)....but this dizzyness is SO SCARY!! And the heart palps are scary!!

My current circumstances: I am 50 years old, but feel like 90......seriously!! I have daily heart palps, daily anxiety, extreme fatigue, legs hurt (can't even do 1 flight of steps, whereas 4 years ago I walked 4 miles per day), have extreme dizziness, my periods stopped again (not sure if in menopause or what?), hot most of the time.......I just feel like total CRAP. I have zero insurance, just struggle to keep my house & utlities paid (yet make too much for government health care), so going to a doc right now just isn't in the picture. Diabetes runs in my family BIG TIME, and I got a free blood glucose meter which shows "occasionally" my sugar level is borderline (prediabetes).

I'm looking at full scripts in my cupboard of Adivan, Klonopin (prescribed by an ER doc becsause he said it was milder than Adivan) & Synthroid (all low dose). My boyfriend keeps yelling at me that my throat is getting larger, he's obvious that my thyroid is enlarged, and I need to take the thyroid meds........but last time i took 1/2 of my meds, my heart felt like it was gonna explode. I had to go to bed for 12 hours. And as mentioned, I am deathly afraid of the Adivan.

Am I making myself SICK due to fighting the very meds that could HELP ME??
And where do I start?????????? Which comes first, the thyroid med or anxiety med????????

Re: Vertigo & Chest Pains....Thyroid? Anxiety? Diabetes? TMJ? Or WHAT????

Leopard Lady-Sorry to hear about all that you have going on.
Step One-to my way of thinking is that you need to get to a doctor and have a thyroid panel , complete blood test, glucose test, and what ever else the dr. thinks is needed.
Now, how to get to the doc with no insur.
It is my understanding that some states have insurance for the uninsured and needy. You need to check with your state about this. Also even without this I believe there are clinics in most states for those on very limited funds. Check this out.
My concern is that while you do not have financial resources for this now --that you may be runnning up higher medical bills in the future by not doing anything-not to mention hurting you body by not having proper treatment for perhaps your thyroid and the diabetes.
I know you said you want to do something. You have looked at your medicine cabinet and are considering what to take. But really for your safety you should get tests done and treat from there. To just guess at what medication and what dose could be very dangerous!
At least the thyroid medication that you MAY need to take is CHEAP! That is the good news. I believe you can get this med at many pharmacies for $4 a month. So much of what you have going on seems thyroid related. But also you mentioned that you are prediabetic and this needs dealing with. And, your complication about anxiety, palpitations etc. Really with what you are dealing with it is perfectly natural to have high anxiety. You have a stressful situation and don't know how to deal with your health.

Please find some help. I hope that some others here will comment about HOW to get help on limited funds. I will watch it and see. If it doesn't you might think about starting a thread-How to get Medical Help with Limited Resources. I am sure many others will have suggestions for you.
Best wishes There are people here and also out there who will be there to help you.

Re: Vertigo & Chest Pains....Thyroid? Anxiety? Diabetes? TMJ? Or WHAT????

I am so sorry you are having a rough time!!! I have to say anxiety was one of my major hypo symptoms as well (along with the dizziness). I think you definitely need to be on the Synthroid, HOWEVER ~ I belive you really need to have bloodwork done now and to be monitored by a doctor. And I am also struggling financially but this is one area I think would be worth going into debt over. Perhaps a credit card for medical purposes only??? I say this because your situation is not going to get better until your health gets better.

I am also one that is leary of meds. When first diagnosed hypo doc gave me free samples of Lexapro but I was too scared to take them as dizziness was a side effect and that was one of the biggest issues I was trying to resolve. More recently doc gave me a script for Ativan for another issue. Was reluctant to take them myself but ended up taking one here and there and it definitely helps. (Just don't take one when you have to drive as they can make you sleepy.) Experiment with 1/2 pill on a night when you are just going to bed.

All of your symptoms are the same ones I had when hypo, and it looks like your heart has checked out OK. Try to remind yourself that when you are feeling anxious.

Re: Vertigo & Chest Pains....Thyroid? Anxiety? Diabetes? TMJ? Or WHAT????

Thank you everyone who replied. I called today to a clinic, who will give me approx 30% discount......ugh....will still HURT my budget ALOT!! I barely manage to keep my house payment & utlities paid as a single divorced woman. There are NO free clinics here, and as already mentioned, I make too much for government aid...sigh. Gosh, my house payment is 3 months behind, for Goodness sake......this clinic stuff is going to knock me for another loop!!
But my appt is sceduled for Dec 1st. I had the option of requesting certain doctors, all of which I knew nothing about.......so I just explained to the lady that I needed somebody who ran THOROUGH bloodwork. I explained to her that my thyroid tests always came out normal, but I needed a doc who would understand that blood tests aren't always 100% acurate.......she said "I think you'll be pleased with Dr XXX"......SO, please those of you who belive in God....PLEASE PRAY for me that this doc HELPS ME!!! I am SO tired of wasting $$ on doctors, specialists, bloodwork, etc......that all tell me everything comes up normal.......URGH!!!! If I am SO normal, then why did I feel SO much better as soon as I started the Synthroid a few years ago, and periods came back like clockwork, etc??????? It took me 5 docs before, now I'm afraid I'm on that long, expensive journey AGAIN......URGH!!!
