Ucsd la jolla vertigo/balance

I went the best vertigo /balance problem doctor in the city of san diego, after 12 years of bppv vertigo and balance problems ,he did the elpy manuever on my good ear and found that i had some particles loose ,and put them back in place,,,,

went back the next week did the eply on the same ear and no dizzy stuff,,,,,good

we then did my bad ear and got dizzy stuff again ,did it twice and dizzy stuff (and eye jerk movement went away) will go back next week and check that ear again.

Note (the doctor uses a vibrating device behind my ear while doing the eply)

his theory is that some particles could rest against the balance censors in the inner ear wich could cause balance problems and tilting in the vision!

He had a woman who had my same problems for years ,she fell back while ice skating and hit her head on the ice,he stated this is common with people with head injurys,,,,,

info only from san diegos best hope it helps!

Re: Ucsd la jolla vertigo/balance

Update second ear clear ,after eply ,doctor says balance therapy should be good now since particles are gone.

I still suffer some bad migraines from an old head injury, doctor says he see,s this with alot of combat soldiers ,head injurys or bombs that go off near soldiers , he said he has had the best luck with topomax ,with these types of migraines,,,,,,good luck.

Re: Ucsd la jolla vertigo/balance

9-17 update wow one week of that topomax 50mg a day , blood pressure normal, craving for alcohol down, migraines going down, light sensitivity going down, (balance problems after 12 years fading away)!!!!mmmm,,,,,no major side effects from the drug,,,,

MY THEORY,,,,,,I had particle in both ears in the balance canal area that were never moved by the eply the first time,,,,bppv from head injury, 1998,,,they were finally moved a month ago and topomax is dealing with the migraine bringing me back to normal as well as my brain dealing with no more particles taping balance censors.

Re: Ucsd la jolla vertigo/balance

Hi,

I, too, am in San Diego and have been seeing an ENT at the UCSD Hillcrest location. I also have difficulty balancing and lightheadedness, but haven't had much vertigo. Additionally, I have a lot of pain in and behind my ears, and often feel fullness in my ears as if I was on an airplane. At my last appointment, the ENT I was seeing referred me to a neurologist, but I think I'd like to get a second opinion from an ENT before I do that. I really think its a problem with my ears and sinuses, as my sinus CT came back abnormal, and I have the pain and crackling sound in my ears.

It sounds like you have been very happy with the doctor you saw at UCSD La Jolla - could you perhaps provide the name of that doctor?

Thanks for your help!

Re: Ucsd la jolla vertigo/balance

Great post warpony! I do have a questioin for you, how did you get an appointment at the university and how did you pay for it?

I have Kaiser insurance, and Im not sure if they would be willing to pay for this service... I think that Kaiser has some good specialists, but I want a backup plan just in case.

Re: Ucsd la jolla vertigo/balance

Sorry I did not see the above newbie's post ,Doctor Eric Virree Ucsd La Jolla the reason I give his name is.

1. In 12 years with bppv balance problems and particles in both ears doctor virree removed them from both ears with the eply manuever for the first time.

2.This has been done by three or four doctors before with negative results (hmm)?

ichbindarren I would just say to your insurance people I gotta see this guy!

note : I take topomax 100mg a day I believe this plays a big part in MAV migraines that you have with vertigo this helps me with dizzy stuff and light stuff but I feel my damage is permanent but it helps me go on with life! good luck......

Re: Ucsd la jolla vertigo/balance

Thanks for sharing. What is this doctors name? How long did you have to wait for an appointment?

I am actually a San Diego native living in the Bay Area. I would even drive down there to see this doctor if I wasnt satisfied with the services up here in Norcal....

UC Davis looks like they have a good Otology/Neurotology practice so I may try to go there if the specialists in my insurance network cant help me.

Re: Ucsd la jolla vertigo/balance

Ok his name is Dr. Erik Viirre, M.D., Ph.D UCSD LA Jolla it might take a month to get in to see him,

1. If both your ears are bad with particles ,he will do what he did with me ,first one ear the first week (ask him to use the vibrating device if you think you have a bad case ) (did you have a head injury )?

2, You will come back the next week and he will check that same ear ,you will (NOT) move to the next ear till he clears that ear I bet he does the epley again and more vibrating device if still not clear. (if clear ) he will move to next ear.

3.How will he know its clear (simple) throw you back hallpike (if your eyes dont jerk around in your head your good to go.)

Re: Ucsd la jolla vertigo/balance

You have been really helpful with your information about your BPPV case. I just have a question for you if you dont mind sharing your opinion.

Since you have had both BPPV and MAV, what are the differences in symptoms?

I think I have BPPV, but I just want to make sure this is the correct diagnosis. I feel almost completely normal when I sit still, but I get both vertigo and dizziness every time I move my head. I get these feelings whether I move my head up, down or side-to-side. Its worse of all when I look up quickly. I do have some very faint nystagmus in the left eye, but it is very difficult to see. I am a little worried that my doctor might not even be able to detect the nystagmus unless they use an ENG test.

Did you have really clear nystagmus from BPPV?

Re: Ucsd la jolla vertigo/balance

Thats the same here ,I fill pretty good sitting and left to right looking is not to bad but up and down starts to be a problem.

1. I have faint nystagmus in my right eye(this is slight damage) , but let me get this clear? Are you saying when he throws you back to do the epley you don't think you will have any nystagmus in any eyes doing any ears? Because if this is so, this means you don't have Bppv or particles in the tubes or area.

2.I hope that clears it up I am 100 percent clear about that unless you have some virus but a year later I don't think so. SO lets hope when he throws you back you have nystagmus (because of particles) he moves them out of there and next week ,he comes back and throws you back and NO nystagmus (particles gone)! Follow me?

3. ALSO yes my problems are walking turning head left to right up and down thats what gives me a migraine along with the balance problem and motion sickness . The topomax seems to take the edge off but it still sucks ,I walk a mile in the morning and a mile in the evening. But my balance still feels messed up and the sunlight bothers me but topomax helps me (100 mgs )a day ,helps with dizzy stuff.....

Re: Ucsd la jolla vertigo/balance

I do have a very slight nystagmus when I lean back to do the Hallpike Dix test for nystagmus. I also get nystagmus when I move my head up or down.

So basically you are saying that the MAV and BPPV symptoms you experience are almost identical?

Re: Ucsd la jolla vertigo/balance

The slight nystagmus you talk of is when they test you tracking (when you follow their finger) in front of your eyes.

1.The nystagmus with the epley is bold jerking out of control , and should go away they next ,you might have just a tad but not much. (from particles)

2.symptoms ? Well I got rid of the particles and still have some of the same symptoms yes, but remember ,I was hit in the back of the head (head injury) thats how I got bppv and this my be how I got MAV and balance damage.

3.This is how the doctor states topomax helps some combat vets who have had bombs go off near them , the get migraines ,follow me?

Re: Ucsd la jolla vertigo/balance

I get nystagmus with the Epley, its fairly subtle, but I can still feel it because it makes my vision vibrate. I think an ENG or VNG would help detect the nystagmus.
