weight lifting now constant lightheadedness and dizziness

my problems 1st started around 8 years ago im certain it was caused through using a rowing machine about 24 hours later i had servere constant lightheadedness for about 3 months the feeling slowly went but i then started getting anxiety due to the stress of the dizziness, 5 days ago i started weight lifting working on the arms and shoulders i think i had over done it and the next day BAM! the constant lightheadedness returns with avengance, i have now been very lightheaded for 5 days, i would not say my neck or shoulders hurt its more like an ache, i have pressure head and the back of my head and neck feel a little stiff, my doc has put it down to anxiety and gived my anti depressants but i know this is not the case, any suggestions would be greatfully apprecaited, has anyone had this before? or any ideas whats can cause this? i was thinking maybe a trapped nerve or something? kindest regards

Re: weight lifting now constant lightheadedness and dizziness

hey Jut,

i had this issue maybe a year ago, i remember it like it was yesterday. i was lifting and it hit me like a train, i felt so bad where i actually just dropped everything and sat next to the wall for a few min until i could gather myself and get to my car. it really freaked me out but i never saw a doctor for it. and now i am having dizzy episodes often which why i started a thread in hopes someone out there has/had any experience with this. because of this i have not been at the gym for about 3 months and its killing me, i use to work out 4 days a week.

good luck to us hope this to can pass

Re: weight lifting now constant lightheadedness and dizziness

Given that your symptoms started after episodes of straining, that brings my attention to a rare condition called perilymph fistula. This often occurs from head injuries, but it can also occur from any type of severe straining. The three most common symptoms are:

1) Unilateral disequalibrium, usually visible on quix, romberg, or singleton turning test.

2) Motion intolerance.

3) Some degree of nausea.

Hearing loss or tinnitus is often associated with perilymph fistula, but it is not necessary for the diagnosis.

I would recommend seeing an otologist (usually called neuro-otologist in the UK). They are balance specialists. Bring the information I gave you and ask about perilymph fistula.

Re: weight lifting now constant lightheadedness and dizziness

This is very interesting, when I had my first problems with vertigo, I was really into weights and working out at the gym. And although I saw many doctors, including an 2 ENT's, PT, and had testing done, given meds, nothing seemed to help. It never occurred to me that my stiff neck might have had something to do with my dizziness! My first dizzy spell was while driving home from work one night, I turned my head to change lanes and it hit me - the room was spinning!

hey Rufous,

that makes a lot of sense now thinking about it... i also suffer from this whole dizzy spell condition. i always find myself stretching, cracking my neck... my neck is stiff more often than not. i will look into this, thanks for bringing it up.

hey Jut, Any updates on your situation? better? worst?

Re: weight lifting now constant lightheadedness and dizziness

Hi jut1983,
5 weeks ago I was bench pressing more weights than I usually do.
that same night I got this constant dizziness.
It's also giving me anxiety.
the dizziness has somewhat improved over the past 5 weeks, but still here.
It's really freaking me out.

for your case, did the dizziness complete disappear after 3 months?

Re: weight lifting now constant lightheadedness and dizziness

Very interesting. I have the same story. Was in the middle of intense weight trainign schedule, hit me once while lifting, then went away, then while driving after I got home it hit me strong and ended up in ER, all clear, MRI, MRV, MRA, echo cardio, ENT doc said inner ear didn't specifcy othre than labs or Vn possible..neurologist came up empty with all tests, all blood.

What is this some kind of neck or back strain? I JUST fired it up again a week ago, and its been present and ive had some wierd sensation in my lower right leg from time to time (not pain, just weird).

Have you been tested for Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, which is characterized by brief episodes of mild to intense dizziness. Symptoms of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo are triggered by specific changes in the position of your head, such as tipping your head up or down, and by lying down, turning over or sitting up in bed. You may also feel out of balance when standing or walking.

Re: weight lifting now constant lightheadedness and dizziness

I an ent and neuro and I believe they tried tests for that with different head positions and nothing came of it. The symptoms you describe are accurate but the problem is the most intense dizzyness occurred 4 times. Twice at the gym lifting weights, once after a long drive, and once after waking up. Other mild dizzyness or lightheadedness went on for months then went away. Now after intense gym day bam in middle of exercise it hit me hard now has hung around mild for last week or so. It seems like I did something liftin weights to trigger this again. That's why I was lookin at plf.

Re: weight lifting now constant lightheadedness and dizziness

I really hope you still read this. I have been trying everywhere to find somebody with my same problem. I have had an MRI, mre, and an mra. Also blood work and an EKG done all were negative. I think I hopefully have found a solution. Do you still have your wisdom teeth? This can cause vertigo when you enduce pressure in your head I.e lifting weights. I am scheduling mine to be taken out. Also my chiropractor actually thinks I messed up a vertebrae and I never let it heal, it's weird after he pops me I start to feel better about 5 hours later. So he suggests I only do cardio for a month and go back to him. I will do that along with getting my wisdom teeth out. Hopefully I find an answer because this condition is awful. For like 5 days after working out I get the sensation that things are moving and I can't concentrate I get a slight pressure in my head and can start to panic and have to leave work. I hope you respond. Finally somebody with my problem .

Re: weight lifting now constant lightheadedness and dizziness

hello everyone, i have been MIA for a while and i was checking my emails here and thought i'd pay a visit.

so in regard to my condition, i am about 75% better... i also read what everyone had to say and it all makes sense to me especially the people who mentioned heavy training etc.. i also find that i will get light headed at times during the night when i am turning from one side to another in bed.

Again my condition is not perfect, i would not sign up to walk a wire or try to balance anything.

i just recently started to get back into physical activities, and let me tell you, its no fun. after riding my bike for 45min to an hour at a moderate level, nothing extreme. i come home and my head feels really weird, even sometimes when i pull to the side to take a few sips of water i feel light headed.

Let us know how things are coming along for you all.
