Cervical vertigo!!!!

Has anybody ever had or heard or cervical vertigo?? If so does anybody have an information they can give me about it? I am going on 6 months now of being undiagnosed with an off-balance feeling all day every day and recently heard about this form of vertigo. I have suffered neck and back pain previous to this vertigo attack so I am thinking maybe they are realted. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Re: Cervical vertigo!!!!

Hi Bellasmom1,

I'd never heard of cervical vertigo until I read your post last night.
I've had on and off dizziness since May.
I've been to the chiropractor, PCP and an ENT.

The ENT told me I had BPV...benign postional vertigo...but the manuvers he did with me and told me to do at home didn't really seem to help much..but the did make my already bad neck, shoulders and upper back really hurt.

I went back to the Chiropractor this morning and he told me that yes, there is such a thing and yes it's very likely that's what I have.
He said it happens with the first 3 vertebrae in your neck are out of place...he sort of poked around on my neck and it almost sent me through the roof, it hurt so bad.
I got cracked and so far so good...he told me to call him again on Thursday and let him know how I"m feeling.

The first time I went a few months ago it did really help, but it came back...maybe I did something to throw my neck out again...not sure...but it seems to be helping this time too.

I'll let you know how it goes and maybe check with a Chiroprator and see if that helps you....it's worth a shot.

Good luck, I know it's a horrible feeling.

Re: Cervical vertigo!!!!

Wow ok so he said their def is a such thing called cervical vertigo? Did he say anything else about it? What kind of dizziness do you experience? I have never experienced an actualy room spinning dizziness that is what has all of these doctors confused. I have an appt with my neurologist tomorrow so I am going to see what he suggests. Hopefully something....lately I feel like these doctors are giving up on me!! My mother-in-law is a doctor and she was saying i need to see a vestibular disorder specialist(one who specializes in balance/vertigo issues) but I can not seem to find any specialist for that. Have you heard of any? Thanks and talk to you soon!

Re: Cervical vertigo!!!!

Hi,

Yes he said there is such a thing, but that most PCP don't believe in it.
I would imagine that's because most PCP's don't believe in Chiropractors, thankfully mine does.

He said it usually comes with Whiplash, arthritis of the neck and back ( which I've had since I was very young...early 20's ) and that some PCP will tell you that going to the Chiropractor causes it.

My dizziness seems to be brought on by head/neck movement...even slight movement of the head and neck when I'm on the computer can bring it on.
Frankly, every Dr. has asked me if I spin or the room spins and I can't really give them an answer all I can tell them is that I get dizzy...not sure who's spinning, me or the room.

No, sorry I don't know of any one who specializes in that.

I felt really good all day yesterday then this morning I bent my neck neck to look down to pick up the cats dish to wash it out and I got dizzy.
Guess I need to be careful for a few days with the movements...I'll let you know how it goes and please let me know what you find out.

One more thing, what is your dizziness like?

Re: Cervical vertigo!!!!

My doc thinks that my vertigo is cervical vertigo as well! Had VNG today to rule out inner ear stuff and I Think all was fine with that. He hasn't gone over the Tx for the cervical vertigo with me yet but I'm anxious to see what he has to say at
My next visit!

Re: Cervical vertigo!!!!

Well I went to my neurologist yesterday and he highly doubts it is cervical vertigo. Maybe everybody is right and doctors do not think to highly of that idea and chiropracters. He is going to do an mri of my spine to rule it out which I was happy with but I also was not happy leaving. He continued to tell me he didnt knwo what else it could be and that maybe i should go see a specialist in Boston or Chicago. That is just crazy I mean if he had a diagnosis for me and it was serious than I could understand going to another state for treatment but they have no diagnosis for me so I am just extremely frustrated. I feel like they will never figure it out!! I just do not know what other specialist to see. I guess I will just have to wait to see what the mri says. He also stated going to another ent to get a second opinion to be sure the last ent didnt miss something. He believes it is something with my inner ears but I do not believe so. So its just a waiting game, and not a very fun one!

Re: Cervical vertigo!!!!

Look up migraine associated vertigo or MAV and see if this fits your symptoms? My doc said cervical vertigo too but chiro says no... My research has led me to MAV which is what I believe I have. Can't get in to see doc til aug 24th

Re: Cervical vertigo!!!!

Well the only problem with MAV is I guess the vertigo is more of a spinning sensation correct? Mind is more of a swaying feeling like being on a boat. I do have TMJ so they are saying my headaches are from that so I just do not know anymore. Also what doctor are you seeing on the 24th to see if it is actually MAV? Is their a specific test that can be performed to confirm this?

Re: Cervical vertigo!!!!

Just seeing my GP on 24th and from what I've read, there is
No specific test...just a matter of ruling everything else out. But, I'm willing to try the meds for MAV because I'm getting desperate! Missed 16 days of work since
May with this mess!!

Re: Cervical vertigo!!!!

Oh I see!!!!!! I am not sure what to do anymore. Do you get a lot of headaches? I mean how are they supposed to diiferentiate between them being MAV and tmj headaches? I am so confused at this point. And only 16 days jeez you are lucky... I have been out of school for 6 months!!!

Re: Cervical vertigo!!!!

Hi Bellasmom,

I have the same symptoms of disequilibrium (unsteadiness) 24/7. Have you found anything that helps? Or a diagnosis? This is so debilitating.

Do you have disequilibrium all the time? Tried Meclizine for 2 days. Made we more unstable. I am trying manual therapy with a physical therapist and vrt exercises. Still in the first two weeks. Will see how it goes...

Re: Cervical vertigo!!!!

Hi!i noticed you both have similar symptoms to my condition.I've tried many different physical therapies and chiro & some massage seemed to actually worsen it.Does it feel like walking on a boat/falling off a building when lying?Drunken uneasyness?Make heart go faster and beat harder? It's terrible especially dealing with medical doctors who go by X-rays etc... that doesn't show problem...Anyways thought I'd say hi and take care

Re: Cervical vertigo!!!!

Hi,

Massage can make me worse as my neck and back of my head is very sensitive to any touch or jarring. I am still almost 7 months into this. I still feel like I am walking on uneven ground, elevator dropping sensations, false sense of internal motion almost feels like I am slightly swaying/rocking. It almost coincides with my heartbeart or pulses. I can feel this sensation in my legs and back if that makes sense to anyone. Very disturbing.

I got better at about 4 months but then had a whiplash type event in the car and everything came back full force.

How long have you had this and what triggered this for you? Injury?

Would love to stay connected!
Jo
